The only time I need the full power of my cpu (running at 1900+ (1600mhz) is when I play games which isn't too frequent. I know they make fsb sliders for windows that will slow the cpu down when I want it to. If I could turn the slider down to say 100mhz fsb (don't think the a7v266e board supports 66mhz) which would drop it to 1200 mhz, would this consume less watts and put out less heat?

My cpu currently is at 55c/131f cooled by an alpha 8045.

You do know you have to put a fan on that Alpha, right? :) Seriously, you either have a very low CFM fan, or bad core contact to be getting that high of temps with an Alpha 8045 and a (I presume) non-OCed 1900+

Im running default everything and my processors (MP 1600 1400MHZ) are running at 49 and 53 with the case open (they have always been a few degrees different even on the Tiger MP board). Im sure underclocking would reduce the load somewhat but how much I dont know. Mookow would know better than I.

Sorry, it's a 1700+ oc'ed to 1900+

It's always been that warm. I lapped my 8045 and put Artic Silver II on per the directions.
*shrug*

Anyone know of any fsb sliders for windows xp. Only one I could find was discontinued a couple of years ago and doesn't support my board.

You could undervolt the CPUs a bit to bring down the temps a few degrees. One of my friends dropped his T-Bird's temps by 10 degrees F (but he was able to get his T-Bird running at 1.525V). mastertech01, if you're interested in that, you'd have to connect a few bridges on the CPUs (I am fairly sure you can do it with MPs, I know you can do it with T-Birds), since your mobo doesnt support any OCing options. Freejack2, you should be able to undervolt through BIOS, considering you have an Asus board. You might not be able to, but by and large, Asus boards let you do it...

Well in a month or less it will get so hot in SW Oklahoma that the A/C will be on, and im sure it will be fine then. I dont want to alter these processors because I plan to upgrade to what ever AMD has to offer in dually in the next few months, and Ill trade these off unaltered. Maybe the next generation will be on a smaller die and run a bit cooler?

Current indications on Thoroughbred aren't looking too good in the cooler department, but they should be quite a performance leap over what you have now.

Will the Barton have the same pinout or will I have to dump the Thunder to run those?

heheh I just got a WONDERFUL 21" Dell Trinitron monitor (model D1626HT). Only $140 from a guy on my campus... somehow he got it free from Dell and it was taking up room in his apt since he already had a nice monitor... it's at least a year old, but he had never plugged the thing in! So a brand-new 21" trinitron for $140... I don't know what he was smoking, but I'm more than happy with the monitor.

Anyway.... the point of this being.... look at the spec sheet I linked to! 410 BTU per hour! Sheesh! Just standing close to it you can feel the heat!

dude, I have 2- 1 giz thunderbird systems, 1 1.2 ghz system, and a dual pentium pro system crammed into my den (10x14 room). Even with the window open, it gets plenty hot.

Well Im not the only mastertech for sure.. Theres MasterTech, and a TechMaster, amoung others. BUt I have in the past used many Intel systems. Ive had 4 AMD systems in the last year and a half.. and as stated the dually AMD chipsets are the only ones I found a lot of success with. Ive had the Tiger and now the Thunder and am well pleased with them.

My main rig is getting an upgrade to an OCed P4 (one of the ones I was working on today). But right now is a 1.4GH Athlon @1575 with my twin X15-36LPs, my twin 73GB Atlas 10K IIIs, and one 73GB Atlas 10K II......and appropriate SCSI optical drives;)

And for extra storage I added a 80GB WD IDE drive.......

My two back-up rigs are 1GB Durons on Pro2-A boards w/IDE drives
