Thought I'd update this thread. The Trinitron still lives, but with the occasional <SNAP/POP!> issue.
I've been looking intermittently for a replacement...every time I find one that I think will be acceptable, either they're out of stock at the sale price, or something comes up and the money has to go elsewhere. (being broke sucks)
Finally...yesterday, I get the Newegg "Quick-Draw Deals" sale email with a Samsung 23 inch monitor for $159. Not a bad price for a decent monitor.
Only when I go to the newegg page, I see that the monitor is actually $189 with a $30 newegg gift card...:|
Still...not terrible. Same price most of the e-tailers have it for with the slight advantage of the $30 gift card...that will pay for a 3 year extended warranty. (yes, I'm one of those people...)
So, before I plunk down my cash, I decide to go out and about and see if one of the local B&M places actually has it hooked up so I can see what the screen looks like.
Turns out, Best Buy has one...same price. I start chatting with the "associate" who turns out to be the "department manager," and he offers me the monitor with the "Geek Squad" 4-year warranty for the same price...
That piques my interest a bit, so I start looking seriously at their monitor offerings. The Samsung has a decent picture, but is a bit yellowish at the factory setting. They also had a 24" Dell set up with the same pic slideshow running...and at the factory setting, it had a MUCH nicer picture. Clearer, not yellowish, no sign of any "tracing" during the brief movie they played...and it was a bit cheaper than the Samsung.
I asked the "manager" if he'd make the same deal on that...and he did, so I bought the Dell. Granted, it's not an IPS screen, but overall, it's pretty decent.
I have 30 days to decide whether I want to keep it or not...so I'm giving it a fair chance to impress me. So far...not bad.
Larger screen than the old CRT, larger text, (my aging eyes appreciate that) pretty clear picture, and instant on feature. No more waiting 5 minutes for the CRT to fully warm up...
Thanks to all who chimed in with advice.
