I missed my A because I got 179.4 points on a 200 points scale. I am closer to my A than you.

doesn't that round up?

I know some professors that don't even round. 90 and up is an A. 89.9 is not an A.

I've had that happen to me, I needed 85 for an A but had 84.8 basically the prof said "An A is 85, if I rounded you up an A would be 84.5 not 85, sorry."

I just sent my professor an e-mail telling him that I had 3 finals on the same day and that that was my lowest grade yet. I usually do better on the tests. I went to every single class and even did most of the extra credit opportunities. Hopefully he'll show mercy and bump me up 0.1%. 🙁

A 90 is an A- in my book.

i hate when teachers round up. if you wanted the A, you should have worked harder. ive had plenty of 89.4's, 89.5's, and 89.9's, and never got the A. its better that way because you learn how to be responsible instead of whining and getting free points. the moral of the story is: work harder if you want an A.

My teacher replied:

Dear Shawn,
You ended up with 447 points.
I didn't take roll, so I don't know of your attendance officially,
but if you say you came to every class, then that counts for
something & I will trust you. I found two fill in the blanks
where you could earn a partial credit of 1 pt each, which
would bring your grade to 449. That's still technically
a B on the 500 point system outlined in the syllabus.
In these cases (which are B's that would round up
to an A using a 2 significant digit system), I can
assign an A-.
I will do that for you based on your good attendance record.

YAY! 😀

Congrats 😀

This reminds me of my friend.. he got a D in an astronomy class and he went to the professor after the semester was over. He just told the guy I WANT a C- to at least pass and the professor did it.. i was like WTF.. can u change my B- to B ? haha

and he said no..

I wouldn't have believe it if he didn't do it in front of me.. it was pretty funny..

i hope you get it.. if you proven you had done a lot.. a lot of times they'll do it..

 right back at you. You didn't score the required number of points for an A and got it by doing the academic equivalent of crying to mommy. It's not like you objected to a subjective grading of a paper or claimed points you weren't awarded in error...

He didn't deceive the professor in order to get a higher grade either. Professors often curve grades based on extenuating circumstances; I don't see how this situation is any different.

Actually if you read his response he regraded my final himself. Usually the TA grades the papers and she barely speaks english. She only gives credit if the fill in the blank exactly matches her answer key. The teacher on the other hand gave me partial credit for 2 of the fill in the blanks since he saw I had the general idea just didn't use the wording he wanted.

Anyway, regardless of what you think I still got an A- and yes I am very happy that the teacher was willing to go to the trouble of regrading my final. Luckily not all teachers are as heartless as you. Gotta love all the self-righteous ATOTers.

it does round up. it rounds up to 179, so I get a A-. I am pretty much 0.005 short.

since when is telling the professor that you went to every class an extenuating circumstance?

The extenuating circumstance was the scheduling of multiple exams on the same day.

If he lied about his attendance, then his actions were reprehensible. If he told the truth, however, then the onus is on the professor to adjust his grade or leave it as is. I don't see how this is any different from any other discretionary adjustments such as curves.

i hate grading on a 4.0 scale using letters.

it introduces inaccuracy to the system.

especially when your grade point is not the important thing, but your rank (like law school)

the profs grade the papers. they generally do it on a point scale. and a certain letter grade (B, B+, A-, etc) will be a certain range that gives a certain number of people from the class. so a B+ might be from 27 to 30 on a 50 point test.

lets say there are 3 classes, each with 1 test (typical law school setup). lets say on the three tests one person scores a 27 on each of them, giving that person a B+ average (3.333). another person scores a 30, 30, 26, or a B+, B+, and B. that person has a lower average in law school (3.222) despite having a higher average on the tests (28.667).

everyone has exams stacked up. That is not a special circumstance. Do you think it is reasonable for question 1 of every final to be "Do you have other exams today?" If the answer is yes, I'd argue that question 2 should be, "Do you think scoring standards apply to everyone but you?"

Here in Canada the grading scheme is different. In high school 86% and up is an A. Now, despite english being my native language, english in high school was my achilles heel. Did great in sciences and gym etc, but english was always borderline. In my final year I wanted the A in english to graduate with all As. The course was worth 60%, the final was worth 40%. I got an 86 in the course, an 85 in the final for an 85.6 > 86% A 🙂

i had an 89.6 for a course, but the professor did not believe in rounding up, i was like it's common practice in the entire free world!!! she would not budge, and well it sucked, she was from Russia. i guess in communist country they do not give you the rounding up of a grade. what sucks is i had an assignment that i did not turn in formally, i just submitted the final product (got an A on that), and she knew i did the legwork (had to turn in research in order to get full credit) it was worth .5% of grade that would of made it 90.1 but noooo i hated her from then on.
