damn you Sony!

Bought a copy of Casino Royale on DVD this weekend.
I like to burn a backup onto my HD of all the DVDs I buy, in case I lose or scratch up the DVD by mistake. Usually I have no problems burning a backup. If DVD-Shrink fails (sometimes I get cyclic redundancy error while initially reading the DVD with DVD-Shrink), DVD-Fab Platinum works fine.
But as soon as I popped in the CR DVD in my burner, I knew it was going to be trouble. A rootkit like progam popped up.
Now both DVD-Shrink and DVD-Fab crashes when they try to read the CR DVD.

No sweat off my back i guess. Just that it'd be nice to have a backup.

ah well...

It's getting to the point where I think I will only use Sony produced disks in a "sandbox" computer until I'm sure they are "Sony virus" free,

No idea if it really works.

I've seen that program in some warez channels on IRC. Usually they list some of the better tools in those places, so I'd put a little bit of faith in it.

Didn't Sony just change their encryption scheme just recently, and there is a big stink about dvd player incompatibilities ?

yea i didnt know CR is Sony Pictures. I found out after I'd already opened the case. In light of the news of Sony DVDs not working on some players, I was worried that CR wont play on my pioneer DVD player. With that and no backup, i'd have to resort to watching it on my PC. But luckily CR plays on my pioneer player.

Use RipIt4Me and then run FreeDVD on the file directory and that will free up your DVD from the clutches of Sony.

disc tray cycling? i just downloaded ripit4me and dvd decrypter. started RipIt4Me, reads disc fine. Click next, create PSL, click Rip DVD. then gives me error "DVD Shrink encountered an error and cannot continue. Invalid filename. The system cannon find the file specified"

meanwhile I get this message in RipIt4Me's logs
Wizard Step 3: Ripping DVD
Starting DVD Decrypter
Ripping VIDEO_TS.VOB to detect unreferenced titlesets
Waiting for Decrypter to be ready
WARNING! Unable to patch decrypter!

hmm. well ive never seen any popups like that with other DVDs. Last time I saw that was a Sony music CD (believe it was gf's Dido CD) which ended up being the dreaded rootkit.

So far I haven't found anything DVD Decrypter won't rip. Sometimes you have to look around for a .psl file or create your own. But its not hard.

Worked for me... you sure the paths are setup right in the ripit4me program? How about starting up the programs before you stick in the dvd?

Not wanting to disparage the japanese or anything, but wasn't their whole economy or rebuilding from their foray in WW2 based on improving or copying existing ideas.

Now...fast forward to today and see them now with everything they try to do with encryption, having proprietary formats, etc.

I know I may be over-generalizing but i hope you all know what i mean
