Bought a copy of Casino Royale on DVD this weekend.
I like to burn a backup onto my HD of all the DVDs I buy, in case I lose or scratch up the DVD by mistake. Usually I have no problems burning a backup. If DVD-Shrink fails (sometimes I get cyclic redundancy error while initially reading the DVD with DVD-Shrink), DVD-Fab Platinum works fine.
But as soon as I popped in the CR DVD in my burner, I knew it was going to be trouble. A rootkit like progam popped up.
Now both DVD-Shrink and DVD-Fab crashes when they try to read the CR DVD.
No sweat off my back i guess. Just that it'd be nice to have a backup.
ah well...
umm...rootkitlike popup??? the thing you linked???looks just like some kind of extras thing for people who put the disc in the PC DVD player...
hmm. well ive never seen any popups like that with other DVDs. Last time I saw that was a Sony music CD (believe it was gf's Dido CD) which ended up being the dreaded rootkit.
i thought the whole rootkit thing was supposed to be transparent?
IIRC, the rootkit loaded itself into memory when you inserted the CD, but you were prompted to agree to a license agreement to install the software that would let you rip tracks from the CD (complete with DRM of course). If you agreed, the rootkit was installed permanently. Otherwise it disappeared as soon as you restarted your PC.
