I wonder what the health state is from people who have canker sores a lot.
I never heard of this before. Neither have i ever experienced this.

Is it a common occurrence to have canker sores in the family ?

My dad said he used to suffer.. and my younger bro and I also has to deal with them. Canker sores usually occur if we bite/cut our lips as mentioned in this thread. Average frequency between my bro and I is like 5-6 per year.. my dad does no have them occurring anymore.

Do you people still have your tonsils or not ?

Everyone in my family have tonsils.

Do you people have a problem with your saliva or the micro organism in your mouth ? Do you consume certain products that suppress your immune systems ?

Nop. We all are pretty healthy, but all are vegetarians.

Do you use certain medication ? Do you eat unhealthy, low in vitamins, minerals and protein ? Do you eat a lot of meat from what it is known that it contains large amount of antibiotics ?

No medication. I usually cook my own food. I do not eat meat AT ALL.. and my recent blood test revealed nothing unusual.

Canker sores or Aphthous ulcers are an ulcer that developes in the mouth usually when one is sick from another cause. The latest theory is that due to elevated histimine levels in the tissues the blood vessels constrict causing little areas of decreased blood flow. You see histamine is released by mast cells as a response to infections and allergies. Histamine is also a neurotransmitter that can be found in the vasoneuronum (nerves to the bloodvessels), especially in the head and neck. ("redundancy of use" that I often use to refute the intelligent design pondits)
So the long and short is you get sick, virus, allergies, sinusitis, what ever. The nerves in the mouth shut off microcirculation which leads to the occasional ulcer.

Treatment of choice. Benadryl liquid, Maalox liquid, ambesol. 1:1:1 - paint on lesions every 2 hours for a few days.

I used to get them constantly, I started eating yogurt with L-acidophilus in it, specifically brown cow, noosa and greek gods brands. Now I haven't had a single one in 4 or 5 years. People can go on with the toothpaste type and the temporary relief all they want, none of that did anything for me.

I get them all the time if I eat lots of Pineapple and drink lots of OJ.

Some of the liturature does support this connection, the theory being that this is a minor local allergic reaction. It seems to happen more with fruits, and patients do often note it with acidic fruits more, but no mechanism related to acidity has been suggested.

I eat a lot of fruits too. :hmm:

But it only occurs when I bite my lips in sleep or while chewing. Oh, and sometimes by my wisdom teeth.. they are just starting to grow.

I used to get these very regularly, and they were quite large and painful. I used ambesol to numb the pain.

I found that now that I don't eat fast food, drink soda or coffee, and eat home-cooked meals, I very rarely get them. My diet changed pretty drastically about a year ago, so I don't know exactly what it was that stopped them from forming.

Interesting. As a child i loved any product with milk in it, Yoghurt yay. Icecream and custard. When i got older, i still had a sweet tooth for milk products but had to cut back to 1 glass of milk in the morning and a glass of milk in the night because of changes in my digestive system. I started getting bloated and gassy as hell after puberty when ever i consume to much dairy products. I do not know if more people have this, but it seemed my liking of fermented milk products (yoghurt, cheese) may have helped a little.

Do you consume any milk products ? Preferred the ones that come from biological farmers and not from the rBGH(growth hormone) cows.
The reason i ask, see upper part of this reply.

Yup, I get them. Any kind of minor injury turns into a sore that typically lasts about 2 weeks.

You can get gels or liquids that contain up to 20% benzocaine. It helps, at least a little bit. Thus far, I don't have oral cancer, so I guess it's not too terribly toxic.:)
(I can go through 1 tube of it a week when I get a bunch of ulcers at the same time, and I've had these damn things for well over 20 years. And I might lose a few pounds too - eating, even with the benzocaine, just burns with every movement of my jaw.)

I only have had a canker sore once, but it was gone the next day after gargling and swishing some tequila and then putting a plug of tobacco on it. I know tobacco was used in the old west on cattle injuries from fences, not sure why it helps when applied to lesions but it does. Also helps bee stings too.

I am sure there are healthier alternatives, but it worked for me at the time and I did not have access to more traditional medicines at the moment.

I don't think the man(in India) who used to supply milk injected those growth hormones. We primarily used to drink Buffalo's milk. All the milk products are home made due to quality concerns.

Anyway.. yeah, but I have cut down on the intake after coming to the US though. I only eat cheese and yogurt mostly.

bactine is the best for cold sores. Just rub it in there nice and good with the bactine. It also numbs it for comfort reasons.

I went through a period where I got them constantly, often where I had accidentally bit the inside of my lip. Oddly enough, this happened during my depressed college phase where I didn't floss or brush my teeth much. Coincidence?

Even after brushing my teeth at least once a day with a sonic care brush, I would still get them fairly often when I bit my lip, and they would last for a week or more, though not as often as before. My flossing was sporadic.

I then got serious about two years ago. I switched to toothpaste without SLS (toms of maine and trader joes sell them), and I started flossing usually every day (sometimes I missed a day). This helped quite a bit. I also invested in a water pic to aid getting rid of all that bacteria buildup between teeth that floss doesn't fully get. Finally, I bought a professional plaque scrapper used by dentists that scraps off plaque on my bottom front teeth, built up over a couple of weeks, which flossing and brushing miss.

It's been months since I last had a sore, and even when I accidentally bite my lip they don't usually develop.

As it is clear, i never had any sores. And cuts and wounds in my mouth heal quickly. I was thinking that maybe this might also help :

I have been using this for around 15 years.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aquafresh
The tube with the 3 color toothpaste.

Before that i used the vanilla version of prodent. Only 1 color.

Since i consume coffee and spicey rich food the last few years, i also use this :

Lysterine mouthwash.
http://www.listerine.com/

To give some idea :
It had been 16 years since i went to the dentist a few years ago, i did not have any problems with my teeth. The dentist found 1 small black spot on one of my molars, but 2 weeks later (the next appointment) it was gone. I had to use Lysterine to to prevent hardened dental plaque on the backside of my lower central incisors.

I hope it will help.

I think if it would be possible, comparison of bacterial cultures used in milk and yoghurt globally all over the planet is a good start.
I can guarantee you that there will be differences.

Bumping to report one. Damn its painful.. got one deep in my left cheek where the both teeth meet. I feel extremely depressed.. and it looks a massive one, going to take more than 1 week to heal. I have a 1 hour lecture and 2 hour lab session to take.. FML.
