My wife's father suffered a heart attack a week ago. While he's progressing at a fair pace, he is 82 years old and this has really weakened him....a lot.
In fact, even after he recovers from it as fully as he can, he'll probably be unable to live independently any longer. So, Debbie, my wife, has been talking about possibly moving up there to take care of him.
Now, I'm very conflicted about this.
On one hand, I hate snow. Despise the cold. That's why I moved back to the South after living in NH, MA for a couple of years and NJ for a year. Yes, the summers here are putrid, but the lake isn't far and neither is the beach. Winters are mild, sometimes mild enough that fishing is nice mid-winter.
It also means leaving job here and looking for employ up there. Not a lot, really up there. So, money's going to suck for a while.
BUT.......for moving up there wholesale, we do get a 1997 Camry that's in nice shape (owned by old people....LOL!) and get signed over to us 4.5 acres of land w/a small 2BR/1BA house, salt box-type, I guess. The rear of the property butts up against the Cape Cod Nat'l SeaShore. The property is across the street from the Wellfleet Wildlife Sanctuary.
The property also has a working dog kennel and from what we've been able to discern so far these past few days, it seems to have a decent income, so we may continue its functioning.
Her father's going to sell one acre to assist our move up before signing the rest over to us. (His tax liability will be vastly lower than it would be for us.) After that, we're on our own. And there ain't much up there for jobs.
So, I guess I'm moving to Mass.
Damn!
