Damn!!! May have to move to Cape Cod....dammit!

My wife's father suffered a heart attack a week ago. While he's progressing at a fair pace, he is 82 years old and this has really weakened him....a lot.

In fact, even after he recovers from it as fully as he can, he'll probably be unable to live independently any longer. So, Debbie, my wife, has been talking about possibly moving up there to take care of him.

Now, I'm very conflicted about this.

On one hand, I hate snow. Despise the cold. That's why I moved back to the South after living in NH, MA for a couple of years and NJ for a year. Yes, the summers here are putrid, but the lake isn't far and neither is the beach. Winters are mild, sometimes mild enough that fishing is nice mid-winter.

It also means leaving job here and looking for employ up there. Not a lot, really up there. So, money's going to suck for a while.

BUT.......for moving up there wholesale, we do get a 1997 Camry that's in nice shape (owned by old people....LOL!) and get signed over to us 4.5 acres of land w/a small 2BR/1BA house, salt box-type, I guess. The rear of the property butts up against the Cape Cod Nat'l SeaShore. The property is across the street from the Wellfleet Wildlife Sanctuary.

The property also has a working dog kennel and from what we've been able to discern so far these past few days, it seems to have a decent income, so we may continue its functioning.

Her father's going to sell one acre to assist our move up before signing the rest over to us. (His tax liability will be vastly lower than it would be for us.) After that, we're on our own. And there ain't much up there for jobs.

So, I guess I'm moving to Mass.

Damn!

Maybe I am an asshole, but if I had a stroke and could not live independently I would hope my kids would be nice enough to pull the plug rather than wipe my ass.

what part of the land is he selling, looks like it will be rather compact from existing structures/boundries/

If you want to go then go, but how about he sells his place and comes to you? The job market is pretty awful right now so you could be unemployed for a long time depending on what field your in.

So sorry to hear about your FIL. Hope he continues to make good progress and enjoys his remaining years.

Enjoy Cape Cod. Good for you to be honest about your feelings - it's a major shock for you to have to go through this. We all do what we have to do, but it isn't always the easiest thing.

How does your wife feel about this?

No kids, just 4 dogs and 2 cats.

The whole thing is....wife is going to do it. She has this sense of obligation for taking care of her sole remaining parent. Guess losing her mother 4 months ago is partly responsible for her reaction in this case. And I don't begrudge her wanting to do this. I almost expected it when we found out he was in ICU and not doing well.....and he's doing a but better now, not so serious. Finally getting some of his personality back, but still having problems staying awake more than an hour at a time.

After all, if the situation was reversed, I'd expect her to follow me. In this case, I'm following her. Same, same....sorta.

I'm not completely negative about this....but honestly, if I really wanted to live in the NE, I wouldn't have left from up there when I lived there in the late 1970's.

Part is the cold....I'm a southerner with notorious thin blood. Even down here in the South, I'm rarely warm enough during our mild winters. I foresee pain this coming winter...and maybe frostbite.

And while it sounds like a deal/setup that can't be beat, remember, we're going to be taking care of someone who will become increasingly invalid as time passes. So, who here will be willing to wipe his butt for me, day after day?

But, away we go. It's definitely on. So, favorite U-rent moving trucks? I've used U-Haul a bit and never had a problem, but curious what anyone else's experience has been with the other lines out there.

Best of luck, OP. As forced relocations go, yours ain't all that shabby.

For income, learn how to use rouge and mascara to enhance your natural beauty and then advertise on the Provincetown craigslist as a male consort for hire with a gymnastically trained body and an accepting and enthusiastic attitude towards unusual suggestions.

there's about 15 people there in the winter, with plenty of "precipitation"

First part is correct about the Truro/Wellfleet section in the winter. Maybe 6-12" of snow total for the Outer Cape all winter.

As for a job? Yeah.....no.

No kids, just 4 dogs and 2 cats.

Penske or Budget truck rental. Get the biggest truck you can (24' iirc)

don't rent uhaul, get a penske or similar instead unless you like to spend time on the side of the highway.

I wouldn't really worry too much about the winters since it's the traffic that's going to drive you insane 🙂.

I know it's not horrible....at least we're not moving to Phoenix.

And as for the job suggestion.....LOL! I'm attempting to avoid PTown at any cost. Well, for that kind of job, anyway. 😉

Only in the summer. Winter = personal racetrack

And this is what I've been told, too. Summer....forget about getting anywhere at any speed. Having never been there during the season, I don't know. I have been there a few times already, but only during Christmas, so I understand the race track.

One big benefit.....there's a MicroCenter that'll a lot closer than the ones I shop now. And there are some audio shops around unlike the crap down here. QAudio, for one.

Unless they've opened one that I don't know about, the nearest one for the Outer Cape is in Cambridge - 2 hours away each way
