How else does a full time college student acquire money and still put up good grades(3.8), also im willing to say that 80pct of people at umich dont have jobs/use parents loot
Too bad some of us out here in college have to WORK JOBS to pay off our own credit card bills. I have two jobs I work during the year, one on campus as an Anatomy teaching assistant, and one off campus as a sale associate at OfficeMax. All this with a full semester of courseloads, and my GPA is 3.4
It's quite doable, it's just a question of how bad do you want it? Most people don't appreciate the opportunity that college is - they think it's owed to them from day 1.
My parents have graciously given me the gift of paying tuition, room, and board, none of which they were obligated to in any sense of the word. Anything and everything else comes out of my pocket.
Consider yourself very very lucky.

Umm... not to brag, but I'm a full-time working college student who has a college gpa of 3.8. I've worked throughout my four years of college and have one sem left. I knew of a few others like myself. You must have really rich parents.. luck you.
My family isn't that well-off. My parents offered to pay for college since they thought I wouldn't be able to handle the responsibility of a full time job and a college education. I knew how big of a burden it would be for them plus my little brother is planning to goto med school, so I promised them that I'd graduate in four years with a fulltime job. I had to struggle a lot (and I still am) through my college years... I can't go clubbing, hang out with friends every weekend... basically I had to forgo the normal things you typically associate with college life. I honestly wouldn't have it any other way... I've gained a tremendous amount of discipline, experience, and knowledge over these very hard four years... plus, my bro is headed off to med school.
Off the top of my head, I can't think of anybody I know who relies on their parents 100%. They either refuse to do so or have no choice... but that is prolly coz the only people I hang out with at college is the evening crowd...
You must be overweight! No meal plan and eating out "a lot". Woah ... you should be ashamed of yourself ... well, you already punished yourself with the extra weight! :/ Money must fall from trees.Originally posted by: imthebadguy

Do you have a meal plan? If not it changes things.
Figure $250/month in food. Over a year (8 months worth of actual school time) that's $2,000
Books should cost no more than $400 a semester. Over a year that's $800.
Cell phone is $40/month. $320 a year.
Of actual "vital" purchases, that's $3,120 accounted for out of $8,500.
If you have a meal plan, then allowing $750 for take-out over the year (not unreasonable) then that only accounts for $1,870 out of $8,500.
Throw in booze on top of that, at say $70 a month. So that's $560 over a year.
Totals
W/o Meal Plan: $3,680 out of $8,500.
W/ Meal Plan: $2,430 out of $8,500.
That leaves a lot of money on useless sh!t.
no meal plan

Society deems it the parents responsibility to pay for their childs education. Though they if a person wants other stuff they should pay for it out of their own pocket.

That's so ridiculously not the case, and it's pathetic that people think that. If your parents are generous and able, they may offer to pay for your college educationk, but they are by no means required to.
THE LAW deems it the PERSON'S responsbility, because once you are 18, you are no longer a child - the law considers you legally an adult, and your parents are not required to fund you at any point past that.
I don't care what society "deems" or whatever other ambiguous sociological factoids come into play, the bottom line is this: You don't get a voucher when you're born that says "redeem for one college education paid for by someone else". If you are a lucky person, as I am fortunate enough to be, then you'll have that offer made to you. If you don't get such an offer and still manage to provide for your education, then you have that much more respect from me.
No one is responsible for your college or post graduate education but you. There just happen to be generous people in the world, some of them our relatives.
