Probably one who's looking for a guy who isn't a douchebag like yourself.

In California the average starting pay is $45k I believe with one of the best vacation policies of any job out there--in total it's about 8 months a year of work. And the more experienced ones who reuse lesson plans simply teach and grade which takes no more than 5-6 hours a day.

They're hardly screwed at all imo.

Really, 45k? Where'd you get that info? Not saying you're wrong, it's just surprising.

My sister is a triple certified special ed teacher and makes ~30k a year to make their lives better for 8 hours a day. You're naive if you think they only work 8 months out of the year as they have to make their own cirriculum in their 'downtime' as well as find another job being a waitress so she can afford to eat.

45k is still horrible, especially for cost of living in California. I'd pretty much called that screwed.

In most other states, starting pay is under $30k. I get to look forward to making around $26k for the first year and not much more for a long time afterwards. Good teachers spend a lot of their 3 months off planning for the next year. And lesson planning takes a lot of time-- it's true that it takes less time after you've gained more experience, but you still need to spend time planning how your lesson is going to work with that specific group of kids. I'm still in college, but I taught a half hour long lesson Thursday with the first graders I spend 12 hours a week with, and planning and revising that lesson took me three or four hours.

It's harder than you make it sound.

QFT. My girlfriend is a new teacher (this is her first year) and what you say is absolutely true. She works like 12 hours a day, at least, and gets paid crap. Its common for people on the right to drop salaries from regions of the US that are at the top 1% of the pay scale to make outrageous claims that teachers are well paid. This is FAR from the truth given what they do and who do they are teaching.

Spin it anyway you want, but it's all about the benjies.

Money buys happiness, it's a fact. Women want a big house and cars. You can't raise a family in a 2 bedroom house.

Low pay isn't characteristic of all teachers. It all depends on where you're located, and how good the school district is. My mother is a special education teacher, makes $93K a year with full family benefits, plus tons of holidays and summers off. She deals with kids who move in from Philly, and are hardly "special ed" but are mainly just too lazy to do anything. She loves her job, for her the money is just a bonus.

The kids who really need help are the jobs that pay absolute sh!t. My sister could take a job at a nice place with way more money but that's not why she became a teacher. She goes where they need the most help, the inner city.

A friend of mine is a 2nd grade teacher. The guy works about 60 hours a week and is making about 45k. It pays the bills, but it is definitly not an easy job. Most of the women he works with are fat and ugly. The decent ones are married already.

NYC has its own tax and if you commute from jersey, you pay their income tax as well. Plus, travel time.

Lets get the facts straight here.

San Francisco Bay Area
Six years experience teaching public school
Masters Degree plus 30 credits
The pay is $41,000.00

For that you'll work six days a week, not counting evenings. You'll do that because everything must be in place for Monday morning. Lesson plans must be filed, materials must be ready to go, etc. Education is continually changing, sometimes changing just for the sake of change. Forget reusing old lesson plans, it won't work. Teachers are lifelong learners meaning you'll have to pick up another year of college every five years to renew your license. That can be done during the summer.

People are naive about what teachers do. BTW, Do you have any idea what the cost of living is in the San Francisco Bay Area? $41,000.00 is nothing here.

My aunt has been an English teacher in Ontario for the past 25 years or so. She makes 50k per year. When essays come in, she does nothing but mark.

My ex's mom was an elementary school teacher in Ontario for 30+ years. She made maximum 60k per year.

For what they do, they need to be paid a hell of a lot more!
