dammnit...my music partition jsut ran out of space

I used to have an external USB2.0 40GB drive I stored all my music on, all 160-192kbps MP3s, but it died at some point and I lost it all :(...no desire to go through all my CDs again and re-rip them all.

yeah, 10 drives with no more space in the first system, and 7 drives with 3 spaces left in the second.

i have another system with 5 or 6 60gb drives not included in that pic.

That's your problem ;) The E2cs are good but they're only $100 headphones... And you're speakers aren't exactly "audiophile quality". Two thing you need to do to see the difference, 1. Hookup your computer to a reciever/amplifier. 2. Get audiophile quality speakers/headphones 3.Turn up the volume 4.See the difference..
Perhaps an external DAC would improve the sound quality.
