Poor baby. I lost at least that much in my lossless classical folder a few weeks ago...only explanation is that i did something stupid when I was drunk.

You just need to go add a second HD. I never use a disk when I install an OS. I keep all files, drivers, etc, on a second drive, as well as a mirror of all my music, vids, etc. :)

My 300 GB of FLACs is split across 2 x 250 GB drives since there were no 400-500 GB drives when I started. Lossless is worth it though. I  FLAC almost as much as my beloved VFINX.

Fück Lossless, I did double blind listening tests between FLACs and LAME --preset extreme MP3s encoded from the same EAC rip, I couldn't tell the difference on my Logitech Z-5500s or my Shure E2Cs.

80GB of lossless music isn't a lot. 120GB of 192vbr or 320cbr MP3s is a lot :p (admittedly with about 10GB of music videos)

Except what if you want to transcode to a lower bitrate or to another format for a portable, streaming, car CD, etc.? Lossy-to-lossy is blurry-to-blurrier.

I have all my stuff in uncompressed wave. Playing games and listening to the APE/FLAC at the same time was too much for my system (amazing) so I keep everything uncompressed. I'll be getting another harddrive as soon as I get the full Bach cantatas.

If I want to transcode to a lower bitrate, I'll use the MP3s I already have. The only time I ever need to do that is either for a. someone who wants 96 kbps so it can be like "the rest of their music" or b. a ringtone for myself. In both cases, quality is no longer an issue. Another format for a portable, car CD, etc.? MP3 is the universal freakin format, my iPod can play it just fine, my buddy's Zen Touch plays it just fine. As far as car CDs are concerned, there is no such thing, whenever I need to hear my music in a car, its good old line out and tape adapter. And in the odd event I want to move to AAC or OGG or something, well, the CDs are on a shelf right here.

EDIT: BUT, as soon as I'm done clearing this backup partition, I'm going to be making FLAC backups of all my CDs in case they are physically destroyed :D

What kind of music did you test. Try testing with some really dynamic classical music. (Classical is about the only thing I make lossless)

Some rock (The Killers, Linkin Park), I don't listen to any classical.
