Doubt it, AT/DailyTech always run with default quality settings in the CP and it still wouldn't account for such a huge difference in score.

Thanks for the benchmarks Joker. It looks like DailyTech is doing something wrong to get results like they did.

What's funny to me is all the weird benchmarks that came out. It seems like the people who actually get their hands on these 7900's have no idea what to bench at. How many people bench 3DMark05 at 1280x1024? Like .01% of the population? Even the greenest noob knows that 1024x768 is the resolution that everyone compares at. It would be like getting a new car model to test out and than seeing how fast it was through the third mile??

Even the guy who had 7900 SLI ran 3DMark with a 1.8GHz A64??

Have to agree with the above. The point of releasing benchmarks is to help illustrate how well cards compare against one another. Why bother releasing benchmarks 2-3 days before the NDA lifts when they're of so little use (especially the Athlon 1.8ghz one)...?

Move along... nothing to see here.

Can you say "skip and save"?

Joker, any chance of a 3DMark06 score?

Sure, I'll go run it now but keep in mind 3dmark06's score weighs CPU and since I'm running dual core it will give me a better score than a single core at the same speed.

3DMark05 scores can also skew heavily when run with a dual core system. Post x2 forceware drivers saw around 7% increase alone when I ran first them:

Score: 9381

Date: 2005-10-26
CPU: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 2616 MHz
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GTX
558 MHz / 1404 MHz
OS: Microsoft Windows XP
Res: 1024x768@32 bit
Driver Version 8.1.8.5
Driver Status WHQL - FM Approved

vs.

Score: 8769
Date: 2005-09-18
CPU: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 2616 MHz
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GTX
555 MHz / 1396 MHz
OS: Microsoft Windows XP
Res: 1024x768@32 bit
Driver Version 7.8.0.1
Driver Status WHQL - Not FM Approved

No, not when I've got a PCI-e 6800GT that is just itching to be upgraded with a 7900GT. If there is any truth to the rumors about the 7900GTs pricing, then it's a golden opportunity to upgrade from the bang for the buck standpoint.

[edit] never mind, the 12x10 resolution explains it.

oh...that explains it. the x1900xtx gets around 5400 in 3dmark06...so thats pretty close compared to the 5200 of the 7900gtx.

and then there's always OCing

Earlier today some preliminary benchmarks of GeForce 7900GT and GeForce 7900GTX were leaked onto the internet pending the March 9, 2006 launch.

System Configuration:
Athlon 64 FX-55
1GB DDR400 (2x512MB)
nForce4 motherboard

All tests were performed with a 1280x1024 resolution. The cards tested claimed 1.2ns DDR3 for both cards. ForceWare 84.12 was used for testing.

GeForce 7900GTX 512MB
650mhz core clock, 1600MHz memory clock
3dmark 03: 17800
3dmark 05: 7600
3dmark 06: 5200

GeForce 7900GT 256MB
450mhz core clock, 1300MHz memory clock
3dmark 03: 13800
3dmark 05: 7000
3dmark 06: 4550

For reference, 3dmark06 on a similar system scores approximately 4700 for a GeForce 7800GTX 512MB running at stock speeds.

We already had a fairly thorough look at GeForce 7900GT, GeForce 7900GTX, and GeForce 7600GT -- all expected to launch just a few days from now. The Quad SLI ready GeForce 7900GTX will launch on the 22nd of March.

if there is no change in architecture just core mhz and mem mhz, then this is just another 7800 GTX 512mb with a different name.

Yep, $299 for the 7900GT is a steal. It might be like the Ti4200 all over again. I might actually consider upgrading to one depending on what ATI has at that price point by then.

Looks like me waiting for the XTX was a good idea. But get this, I told the guys I bought the card from I wanted the 7900 GTX, so they said return it for a full refund so I can just buy the 7900 GTX off their site again.
So thats what I'm doing, only to buy the XTX again for £40 less! :p

Bargain basements!!!

Man I love price wars!

And damn, I feel so so sorry for those that paid $800+ for the 7800 GTX 512mb!
Hope 2 months was worth the premium you paid :p

I plan to wait to see what sort of numbers it can put up in FEAR, CoD2, etc. Last thing I want to do is buy a 7900GT/GTX and find out it can't keep up with an X1900XT when it comes to shader-intensive games in higher resolutions like 12x10 and 16x12. I intend to only buy one GPU this year and it has to last a while and put out strong performance in higher resolutions.

Funny you should mention 16x12.

In COD2 there's no difference for me from 16 x 12 and 19 x 12!
Infact it runs better at the higher res! I find I get a good ave 50fps+ with 1920 x 1200, max everything, but large number of corpses, no shadows (havent tried with them on), 2x AA, but with Adaptive super sampling enabled.

Looks just breathtaking and runs better then anything yet.

I also want something that isn't a jet engine inside my case (one major reason I haven't just went ahead with an X1900XT) and that has its fan connected in the way that allows ATITool or similar programs to throttle it down.

Thats a good thing, that you can manually control fans.
Also, if you dont like the cooler get the HIS custom cooler version ;)
