I use it for work (underground electrical contracting). I used to never carry a knife before this job. Now I feel naked without one.

Agreed and I don't even need it for a particular job. Unfortunately, my current job is a little too PC for me to carry, so I have one in my apartment and I am always going back and forth to get it.

Lifetime guarantee, if you ever break it, they replace it. Unlimited times.

Not sure what models my Dad's old buck is but I know he got it at least 30 years ago. I have it since he died and it is such an incredible knife. Only problem is it has outlived its case so I need to get a new one to carry it in.

self defense? of what?

I don't live in a terrible neighborhood but it can be rough sometimes. I want my lady to be able to defend herself if she has to.

Actually you will just be providing an assailant with a weapon to use on your girlfriend. Giver her mace or pepper spray but not a knife.

oh yeah I forgot all females cannot defend themselves.

A knife at close range is a lot more dangerous than a gun if you know how to use it.

Most pro bodyguards would rather face an assailant with a gun than a knife anyday. I am talking normal handguns and at close range (where an assault would happen)...if someone is in a belltower with a M1...not much you can do short of being armed with a rifle yourself.

Also most of those commenting on the 'why' would someone need a knife, probably don't venture off the beaten path of running to starbuck's for coffee, then to work/school, some place for lunch mid-day and then the commute home, rinse and repeat everyday. Clubs/bars are too low brow for them and being out 'late' can be dangerous.

4am and I am walking to my car and a few guys come out to follow/see what's up...having a weapon to equalize the situation if needed is a good insurance policy. However, it doesn't replace being fit and a little 'bag' work here and there. I know a few guys on motorcycles (my brother included) that carry concealed esp when out late in downtown areas. They don't carry all the time though, even concealed and legal...someone feels a gun under your clothing through a hug or by accident, it sets the wrong kind of tone to many people and is an uncomfortable position to be in.

I'd block the bullets with the Leatherman Wave I carry.

I carry more as a tool than anything, but would use it as a last resort in a defensive situation... getting into a knife fight with someone is pretty high on a list of things I DON"T want to do...

I very nearly convinced myself to buy one of those a few months ago, but couldn't quite pull the trigger.

The Bradley Alias seems to be a pretty decent alternative at 1/2 the cost.

I'm currently carrying a low-end Benchmade framelock that I picked up after losing my last knife (the only reason I couldn't bring myself to buy a $400+ knife).

If you shop around, you can usually get a good deal on a Sebenza... alot of people buy them and just keep them in the box without ever carrying them... I got mine from someone who did that and paid quite a bit less than retail.

I have several Benchmades, and will carry my 940 Osborne if I need something slimmer and lower profile, but don't use them nearly as much since I got my Sebenza. Really good knives for the money though!

As far as losing the knife, I had one close call. The pocket clip screws had backed off a little and I didn't notice. I was at a carbine class in LA and left that night after the class ended to head back north. I lived about 5 hours north and east of LA at the time. I got to Lancaster and stopped for gas, when I realized I didn't have my knife. I went through all my gear bags and couldn't find it, and realized I must have dropped it at the range. I drove back and the range was closed... I slept in the back of my truck that night and went in the next morning. Found it laying on the range just before a local PD used it for training. That was a close one!

I'm a college student, and I happen to be involved in a student organization that involves refurbishing and recycling computers. A knife is an indispensible tool for that. Open boxes, short headers, remove screws, pry stuff apart (though Craftsman flathead screwdrivers get used for stubborn stuff, because they're free to replace), force locks (again, craftsman tools get damaged on the stubborn stuff), score plastic, various fit and finish work on custom builds, wholesale removal of cabling. Yes, we have normal tools for all of that, but it prevents me from having to keep tabs on where each tool is, and having to run around the floor to get it.

Gut hook FTW!!! Seriously, I can't imagine living without a knife that had a guthook now. The other tools on it are useful as well, so it's with me at least as much as my wallet is.

Not a self-defense weapon (that's what my gun is for), but mind-boggling useful as a utility item. Now if I could just remember where I put my towel. 8-(

I used to have a ParaFrame... It was a really good knife until I layed it down while preparing cement.

All I need to say is oops!

Yeah I agree.

QFT - The moment you bring a deadly weapon into a fight your chances of being seriously injured get a lot higher...

Why does the knife need to be for hurting someone?

Pocket knives have a multitude of uses. A friend of mine used his to cut someone out of their seatbelt when they were trapped in a car. Can be used to open many things when scissors aren't nearby. Its a tool.

I usually carry one of these or one of these these . ;) I also carry a Leatherman Wave plus a little flashlight on my keychain with a Spyderco ladybug. I don't carry a knife for defense, just for cutting stuff up. Plus I like collecting I try to carry something different evry day. :)

Well, the OP said self defense, and I am of the opinion you should not carry a knife for that purpose unless you have LOTS of training.
When you get enough training you wont be asking nerds on a computer forum what to carry.
SOOO......
I can only assume you havent had enough training yet.
Dont carry a knife for protection. They are actually a liability until you know how to handle them.

Get pepper spray. Get two. One to practice (preferably on a non-human target) and one more of the exact same model to actually carry around.

EDIT: I got several videos and talked to some friends in law enforcement and security. I learned a lot, but the most important thing I learned is that I should spend the time and money on a personal trainer if I want to take it seriously.

EDIT 2: I just read the OP's post a little more closely.
He was asking about self-defense AND tools.
Concerning the latter I like the SOG multitool.

For daily use the blade is more than good enough.

When I was in the Navy I carried a classic Case knife.
