Parts list looks fine, EXCEPT for that PSU. ThermalTake TR2 PSUs are nothing to write home about.

Seems a bit overkill, but if he can afford it, fine, it won't be overkill a few years from now.

Edit: Possibly get him a pair of 3TB HDs for a RAID1 for his video editing?

Thanks Larry. Exactly I agree with you.

I mean 437 dollars for a 256 SSD is crazy, but I think hes gonna pull the trigger on it. will let u know soon.
thx all

Also should throw in a Blu-ray burner as well, to have another medium for backups. A DVD burner won't exactly be considered something I'd put in a system, "made to last". If he doesn't have one already, though technically separate, do him a favor and throw in a really good UPS.

yes True thanks for that

How much is a blue ray burner ? Your right but the media is so expensive how much is a blu ray CD worth ?

3. Please please please toss that PSU out of your build. For not much more, you can get the Lepa Gold rated 500W PSU for that build. It's modular and comes to $78 after coupon code. Lepa is identical to the Enermax Modu 87+ but has a shorter warranty (hence the lower price). Or go with Corsair or Seasonic (but this brand has a huge price premium) or Antec or PC Power & Cooling. Those are all proven PSU manufacturers.
Hell, just get either the CX600 or ENP600AWT (they're both the same PSU) and call it a day. Can't beat a good 600W PSU for $29.99AR :

Like other's said ditch the tr psu.

Had me a 2600k build with a gtx580 powered by their 750 model.

Crapped out on me took out my system basically.

Got stuck with a $200 pentium d computer for 2 months till i was able to replace it with something decent again.

2600k is a nice cpu im rebuilding with one in 2 weeks im hoping it gets me 3 years which i know it will.

Your father will have a field day with that 2600k.

Here is an example bundle from newegg which gives you the burner + 5 free disc's along with a 30 pack of disc's for $121 plus CA tax and shipping. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...t=Combo.658660

Guess you'd need to find some software package to go with it tho :)

Personal experience with Bluray disc is that they are not very practical. Sure you can back up your stuff at home, but those disc are write once only and if you get the re-writable ones, they are expensive as hell. And if you put stuff on the bluray disc, it's hard to read it on other pc, like work or friend's home cause not everyone has bluray player. For transporting files and such, your usb stick is much more usable. For backup, terabytes of HDD is cheap and you can re-write as many times as you want. I am only using bluray drive for ripping bluray movies now.

256gb of ssd isn't much. I had a 160gb just for OS and it was filled up in a year. I now have a 256 just for OS. Looking back, ~$500 for just OS drive is a bit crazy. :p

I recently bought a Seagate Momentus XT hybrid for my laptop and is quite happy with it. You get 500gb for less than $100 and Anandtech has pretty favorable review (don't look at synthetic benchmark but real world tests). Sure ssd is fast but I just find the size a bit too limiting. The Seagate is decent fast and give you much more space at a great price.

I've bought somewhere around 15 Thermaltake TR2s, and none have failed. I've even shorted out and burned out a mobo and the power supply stayed alive. And one of the TR2 series has like 5000 reviews on newegg, or some crazy high number. I'd say these are proven. They are a bit low on efficiency though...

It sounds like you are building a system you want. He don't need all that crap. Makes no sense why you would buy a K cpu when your dad could care less about overclocking. Nor would he notice the difference between a $89 system board and a $220. That hard drive? nahh! get him a 1 terrabyte sata 3 drive, or two. Video editors need lots and lots of gigs.

I'd go back to the drawing board if i were you.

p.s. Photoshop speed is not done in the GPU. Pick the video card that will do the resolution you need and the number of outputs you need.

LOL your funny LOL floor

Lucky you i had just one and it was the bad one LOL.

Usually love thermaltake psus i had a 750 tough power last me almost 3 years from a e6750 8800gts build all the way up to a build with a i7 940 and gtx295 i sold in 2010.

But no more low end crappy psus for me no matter the wattage or 12v rating.

After that tr2 crapped out my system my gf complained later about her hearing a whining sound coming from the pc.

Guess the psu was known according to newegg complaints about buzzing and whining.

Here is the new system I built last weekend which I think would perform similar to the one you woud build but costs much less:

2600K + Ninja 2 (no fan, just HS, socket 775 resuse old one)
ASRock Z68 Pro3-M
2X4GB G.skill (easily expend to 4X4GB for $70-$80 more)
Intel 160G G2 SSD
WD Green (quiet) 2TB for data storage/backup
Case/PSU/BD-RW: reuse.

From your description, I don't see why you need a expensive P67 MB and a descrete video card. A 256GB HD is nice but way too expensive. I highly recommend a 80/160GB SSD combined with a 2TB green HD for storage.

I recommend a cheap Z68, 2500k, 4GB stick RAM (2-4), smaller SSD with 2TB HD's.

I just want to add, I disagree with the people saying to NOT get him an SSD. An SSD is the #1 thing I wish I could get my parents to buy. I think it would blow their minds.

Hey, don't talk like that. Keep your head up brother, things will get better and maybe someday you'll be able to afford one for them. Someday.
Until then, keep praying and good things will come your way.
thx,gg,gb

Hey all Im happy to say my dad upgrading. He is not a gamer .

He does video editing and Photoshop
This what I got so far from amazon.com

ASUS Sabertooth P67 1155 $212.99
Sandy 2600k @ default settings, $314.99
Thermaltake TR2 600w $64.99
Samsung 256GB SSD $437.56
Corsair 16GB PC3-12800 2x 8GB $179.99
EVGA 460 1GB $169.99

Free Shipping from www.amazon.com Total $1380.51

It's pretty obvious you're a troll brah (or you just don't know much about computers), but this is what you should be getting your dad if he's into video editing and photoshop

motherboard (as long as its decent)
ram (16GB should be good)
Sandy 2600K (or the 980x if your dad wants to do some rendering too)
better PSU
SSD (for OS - stick with the 256 if you want)
3x1TB HDDs (for video storage)
6970 or GTX580 (to accelerate photoshop or for transcoding)
a good 30" monitor (dell ones are generally pretty good).

probably more expensive than your current setup, but your dads got the dough right?

1. How much faster does Photoshop work with a GTX460 1GB over say a GTS450 1GB? I see that there is a way to do a simple software unlock to boost CS5 and CS5.5 performance with an NV based card. You should ask around on our forum from people who have actually done this or have used an NV based GPU in Photoshop to see what their experience is like. Either way double check that since there is no point in buying a $170 videocard if it won't help him in Photoshop (and there is it if it will). At $170, the GTX460 1GB sounds expensive. You are very close to the faster GTX560 with rebates.

2. I would change that SSD into a Vertex 3 or Intel 510. Does your dad need 256GB though? Maybe 80-120GB is sufficient for OS.

3. Please please please toss that PSU out of your build. For not much more, you can get the Lepa Gold rated 500W PSU for that build. It's modular and comes to $78 after coupon code. Those are all proven PSU manufacturers.

4. Go for a cheaper motherboard. Is your dad going to be overclocking? Doubtful. Either way, even budget boards will allow a 2600k to get to 4.7-4.8ghz.

Gigabyte Z68 with 2 SATA 3 ports for $120
Gigabyte Z68 with 4 SATA 3 ports for $144.

5. Does Photoshop benefit from more than 8GBs of Ram? I don't know but if you are set on 16GBs, G.Skill is selling DDR3-1600 4x4GB for $144 after coupon.

gg and gl.

Thanks Russian my friend. ... Also I will change to blu ray ..... thx
