Full disclosure my waistline has seen better days; I'm not speaking as an 18 year old who has no idea what losing weight is like.
 
I don't like the idea, the entire point of insurance is to pool everyone together for cheaper rates. Thats what makes insurance work.

Turning against each other will make it more expensive for everyone. Cause it won't stop at weight, next they'll want your genes examined, or will have discounts for showing up to exercise classes etc. So long as its not you getting charged more you think its fine. Most people probably think they will be able to make every cutoff. I don't smoke and I can lose XYZ weight so screw everyone else who can't.

The cutoffs are arbitrary though. Who really knows how much weight is correlated to health. We know it is statistically, but does it matter if you are 160 vs 180? Would it go by BMI? BMI has always been flawed.

This is bad. I'm not fat and I don't smoke but I know bullshit when I see it.

Insurance companies are in business for profit, any kind of scheme like this isn't out of the goodness of their hearts to skinny non-smokers, its to make successive health related cut-offs they can justify making so that more and more people have to pay higher rates. Say the population is 50% "healthy" and 50% "unhealthy" by these guidelines. They will give the healthy group a $50 discount and charge the unhealthy group $75. You know it. Don't be dumb.

The company made the decision to go with an offered plan. If you don't like this then you have to look at both the company and the insurance provider.

That said this is hardly a new occurance. 'Wellness' programs started rolling out 3-4 years ago

The plans I have been exposed to provided a doctor's note provision so that if you 'failed' a metric the doctor could make a notation that you were, in fact, healthy and that superseded the metric. Several heavy weightlifters had to get these as their BMI was higher than 'appropriate'.

That said I see this as a very slippery slope but one I think will be hard to defend against as health care costs continue to rise and be borne by more and more taxpayer money
 
I don't think having people pay more for their shitty health choices is a bad thing, personal responsibility right?

I think in the long term, healthy people are much more expensive to our society. They will live to their mid 90's, sucking on medicaid, medicare, prescription drugs, and ss the entire time - 30 years of welfare. Unhealthy people tend to die off around their mid 60's before ever getting the opportunity to be a real burden to society.

Meh...

People are refused jobs all the time for testing positive for marijuana. It could easily be argued that a casual marijuana smoker who'd be denied a job at many places could be a much better employee if their drug habit is practiced on their time.

Cigarettes are a different thing. A cigarette smoker is an addict. There's alot you can tell about a cigarette smoker... lack of self control.. you know they're itching to stop working to go feed their drug habit... and going along w\ the thread, they're intentional causing great bodily harm to themselves and are more likely to require insurance claims.
 
I think it is a good idea to make people get a physical exam once in a while. My wife has seen a couple people die because they never went to the doctor. If you have high blood pressure and dont know it, then the first time you will find out is when your ograns start failing or you have a brain anyerism. At that time it will be too late. Knowing your numbers and telling someone is going too far. For instance, if someone drinks and gets drunk every Friday night, is that worse than if a person is overweight and takes medication to control it?

You could go to a doctor and never take the high blood pressure medication. You would still die.

Smoking and drinking could be just as bad. Then there is anorexia.

And healthy people tend to be more productive during their lifetime more than making up for the last few years of their life.
