CVS to Workers: Tell Us What You Weigh, or Else

CVS Caremark (CVS) has put its employees on notice that they need to reveal their weight or pay a monthly $50 penalty

"Avoid the $600 annual surcharge," CVS warns its employees who use the company's health insurance plan.

They've been told they are required by May 1 to show up to a doctor for an annual WebMD (WBMD) Wellness Review and submit to tests for blood sugar, blood pressure, cholesterol and body mass and body weight.

"Going forward, you'll be expected not just to know your numbers -- but also to take action to manage them," the CVS policy states.

Smokers working for CVS are also warned: "You must either be tobacco-free by May 1, 2014, or participate in the WebMD tobacco cessation program."

WebMD did not immediately respond to a request to comment on its program.

My work did the same thing this year. If you didn't get a medical exam your insurance went up $500 a year. It's also more expensive if you smoke.

Yes, just saw you posted this in Off Topic.

Are you going to lose a nice looking Pharmacy Tech out there too?
You said she was fat mcowned. Now she's nice looking?
This policy is fine. Fatties cost everybody too much and it is time they either put the chips down or paid more instead of commie-style expecting us to feed their habit.

My work has been doing this for 3 years now. If you participate in the annual health fair and sign up for the health awareness program you get a 5% discount on your health insurance premiums.

Can't you still buy cigarettes at CVS? Would make this even more amusing.

I wish the private industry would set up a public gene database, where everyone is selected for employment based off who has the best genes. it would eliminate applications, hiring.. etc. just cut the fat. anyone not born good enough should be forced to live in project communities where they will not be given adequate education or nutritious food because its way too expensive for people who are no good for working.

Yes, CVS sells cigarettes and cigars. The smoking cessation products are located beside the cigarette section behind the checkout counter.

oh wow, so its morally ok for cvs to SELL cigs, but they can fire people for smoking them? this shit is completely out of hand. corporations, INSURANCE- please, stay out of our lives and focus on your jobs.

And this wouldn't have anything to do with CVS being mandated to provide health insurance to all its employees, now would it? Kinda like replacing 1 full-time employee with 2 part-time employees? No one could have ever predicted such a brilliant mandate would backfire.

This has nothing to do with the mandated health insurance. Please show me where this has any direct correlation to the mandated health care law.. seriously.

As it states right here in the article: "The use of health screenings by employer-sponsored health plans is a common practice. According to a National Business Group on Health survey, 79 percent of employers offered a health assessment in 2011 and 76 percent of those employers offered incentives for completion.

Many companies have been doing this for years, but this is just a tad overboard. Besides this seems almost on the borderline illegal and could be discriminatory, trying to force someone to divulge any medical information about themselves.

I don't think having people pay more for their shitty health choices is a bad thing, personal responsibility right?

You may want to reconsider that statement. Not only does Obamacare have provisions for employers about these "wellbeing" programs, but also for insurers to charge smokers higher premiums.

aren't they focusing on their job? Healthcare for fat people is EXPENSIVE. They're trying to get people to be healthier. Then again it's an option to be on healthcare now so this is all up to the consumer. Oh wait, no it's not. Thanks Obama.
