Cussing and getting around the language filter....

I'm not talking about trying to get around the actual filter.

What I'm talking about is modifying your word - you all know what I mean, typing "fvck or sh|t" and stuff like that. I'm not saying that that's bad, just an observation.

My question is to the people who modify words even though they're not filtered - like "ass" or "bitch". Why do people put "a$$"??? Is it because you think you're not allowed to say it, or do you believe that by changing two letters the word magically transformes into a non-cuss word?

What is your rationale? Is it because you're Christian or simply against swearing? The way I see it that simply putting a different symbol doesn't change the meaning of the word whatsoever or makes it less offensive.

I don't know why people do that with words like ass and bitch, I guess they just aren't comfortable cursing... fvck that :D

That's my point though - if they're not comfortable cussing, why say "a$$"? To me it's the same thing - you're still cussing. And you're still thinking the word.

hmm, well, I find it makes a conversation harder when some one uses swears as verb's, nouns, adjectives, and other types of words. its like they think that they can just use one word, and have it mean/be a different thing. In a more decent example, how after the movie clueless, "like" was the only word you needed to know.

Like, like like like my dad like dude like dude dude like like like his car, and whatever like like dude you know? like like.

I see people write "he11" instead of "hell", wtf is up with that? I've seen a few people around here that are afraid to say "damn" too :Q

Oh and I don't think most people are completely aware of all the words that are banned so they just are doing that to be safe ;)

Yeah I brought this up not too long ago. People should be more respectful of the whole 'all ages' board. I saw a guy with the username 'Phuct' over in the hot deals forum. What gives with that!?

I don't think its a matter of people being afraid to curse, I think its more a matter of respect to others. I know I curse in real life sometimes, (hey, it just pops out) ;) but do not see a need to bring that to a BBS.

I have no problem with the language filter, and think that it is very good that we do have one - even though we all know how to spell things differently and still get our message across.

Just curious what people think about it though.

Well, off to class - post while I'm gone, so I have some reading material when I get back ;)

Good question, actually. I'm of the opinion that english is a wonderfully facile language and cursing can be avoided. That, and you can still get your message across. Example: "Your mother enjoys the embraces of barnyard animals." No cursing there...:)

The thing that gets me is that the PG-13 movie rating is actually much more relaxed than the mods here. If they can say it in a PG-13 movie, why can't we say it here? The internet is not a G rated place, if our "all ages" population can't handle the content in a PG-13 movie, maybe they shouldn't be here.

Just my $0.02.

Yea he right, hehe
BTW when I saw Anacanda and it was rated PG-13 I was surprised when they said "F*ck", "Sh!t" and all that stuff, so Viper's Right

Any English teachers/majors here who have opinions? Not cursing would eliminate a useful and very powerful set of words from your vocabulary. They are not appropriate in a formal situation, but whn conditions call for it they show emotional charge very well. When overused they are worthless (this is why we have the filter but can sometimes get away with teh different spellings I suspect), but are still a very valuable tool for communication :)

Uh, a lot of us (read: "me") just assumed that words like "ass" and "damn" were banned and still wanted to get the meaning across. Also, I usually replace the vowels with an asterisk (d*mn, sh*t, b*tch) when I intend to convey "casual swaering" and don't want the message to be construed as being too angry. I have no taboo against swearing, hell, I swear quite a bit, surprises the hell out of people sometimes.

Personally, I thought the moderators around here were from the Christian Coalition so, I just took the safest route.

Defeat the filter again, and it'll be the last time.
