EDIT: changed the title to better reflect my true concerns.
COD1 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> COD4 >>>>>> COD2 > COD3
Call of Duty 1 is still the standard for FPS for me.
No other game ever came close to its intensity. I disliked CoD2 w/ the implementation of the
Halo shield, auto-replenishing teammates, and absurdly dumb AI. CoD3 is just not a good game.
CoD1 had better AI. Although the AI was still heavily scripted, at least they came after your position more aggressively.
In CoD1, you actually relied on your teammates, vip's would actually die, and your teammates would not respawn when they were killed. There was a huge incentive to help keep them alive by not being passive and forcefully killing the enemy so your teammates will not die. Trying to help your AI teammates made the game feel sooo urgent. I loved it.
Auto-replenishing teammates really, imo, brought down the quality of the series? What's the point of trying to kill the enemy so they don't kill your teammates when they'll respawn anyway? And when they do respawn (in CoD2/3), they cross the line of fire to get to their scripted positions, and they'll get in my way... *BAM ..Friendly fire will not be tolerated* When I have respawning teammates, I don't have that urgency to get around that corner to kill everyone as quickly as possible. "Oh i'm hit..i'll wait 'till the halo shield regens...ahh ok time to come out and shoot again"...bleh 🙁
The hardest difficulty was really hard because there were no health packs + no halo shield, and you had to go through checkpoint to checkpoint w/o even getting shot a few times.
I really cannot understand halo shield in the CoD series. It works in games like Gears of War and of course, Halo. For CoD, NO. NO NO. I lose that intensity and urgency feeling that CoD1 brought. I lost the immersion.
CoD4 is a good game; especially the sniper level, the level where you rescue the downed cobra pilot (which, btw the cutscene afterwards is probably one of the more f'ed up sequences i've seen in gaming), the gunship level, and the last airplane credits level (which I still cannot beat...I would just flash/run/flash/run and still can't get to the VIP in time...60 seconds is way too short)...
But CoD4 still doesn't have that total immersion that I felt with CoD1.
I have a feeling that console gaming brought upon the "halo shielf" gameplay into the series. I'm sorely disappointed.
Oh and before you guys flame me away, I play CoD4 online every other day, and still think it's one of the better games out there (but not even close to the GREATNESS that was CoD1).
I beat CoD1 3 times due to its greatness. The most difficult difficulty in CoD1 took me a month to beat since it was way too insane. CoD4 vet took me a week of casual play 😕. Vet difficulty really brings out the stupidity of the AI. They still just stand there, going to their pre-scripted areas, but shoot more accurately and you just die quicker.
EDIT:
I played CoD1 and 2 on the PC, 3 on the 360, but i couldn't handle more of the gameplay after a few hours, and CoD4 on PS3. CoD2 on the PC felt like some half-assed port.
Now they're going to milk the series (for lack of a better term). CoD5 will be made by the team that brought the crapfest that was CoD3 (and go back to WWII).
/rant
CoD1 will always be in my heart forever ahhh
EDIT2: changed some sentence structure and wording for clarity.
