Cue anti VW comments

The GTI had an issue last night.

I was driving home and went to pass someone. Foot down half way, engine revved to 3,500rpm and stopped revving. There was no power. An obvious feeling of no boost. Turned the car off and back on again. It wouldn't start immediately. Hesitated a lot and when it finally did kick in it had a CEL. Still no power but I didn't test it, I limped into the nearest parking lot and had VW roadside come pick her up.

Heading up there now to get my loaner car. Will probably be a few days before I get her back. :(

What year? Had you noticed anything prior?
Nothing. It was sprinting its way up to 90 like it was nothing about 20 minutes before. 2012 w/ 12k miles on it.

That seems to be the consensus. I'm not going to bother buying new coils now when its under warranty and still so new. I'll have the dealer replace them and then get R8 coils later on my own.

Though, I don't think it is coils because I would have had a rough idle

not always true, At idle there isn't as much juice going through them so it is less likely to arc if the the tops are cracked. I had a supercharged MK4 VR for 6 years. Lots of experience with bad $650 coils, Blow Dryer and JB WELD to the rescue =). Even my 1.8t A4 had a couple coils go bad. At least those were individual igniters on each Plug that were a fraction of the cost of the coil pack on the VR.

You also could have a bum plug that can't handle any power.

By any chance was it wet out recently?

was it very cold? sometimes my Evo would overboost when cold and I would get boost cut. It would cause a CEL that I was able to clear by unplugging the negative battery terminal. I then bought a OBD II scanner that was able to clear it also

It has been raining all day the past 3 days.

No, humid out. Low 70's and humid from all the recent rain.

I think the riddle has been solved. Excessive moisture is most likely the culprit along with 1 or more cracked coils. Should be an easy fix, and cheap if you were to do it yourself if you weren't going to get it fixed under warranty.

Sounds like it went into limp mode. I'd guess coil as well. I keep a code reader in the glove box. Surprisingly I've used it more on other peoples cars than my own.

This is the one I have: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Ordering that ASAP. Thanks!

Fail. Well, I'll have the dealer replace the coils and then order a spare set of R8 coils when I feel like it. Dammit.

what is the fail?

Also, there is no reason to order that specific reader. I would just mosey on over to auto zone and pick up a cheapie over there. They pretty much all do the same thing unless you spend some more coin and get a feature rich one that can do airbag stuff and what not, but if you are going to go that route I highly suggest a VAG-COM. It's a Volks-AUdi specific device that will give you lots of control over your cars ECU

That it is something so basic and easy to replace lol. The fail is that I had it towed to the dealer because I was worried it was something much more severe. I was worried if I had driven it anywhere and waited I would have done something bad to the engine. It did not cost me anything and I get a loaded loaner car for the next few days (if they don't fix it today) but it was an hour of wasted time for something that I could have fixed on the side of the road with a $20 part in 20 minutes.

It would suck if the dealer went and reflashed the ecu to a stock rom trying to fix the car. I'm not sure if that is a course of action they would/could take but would suck never the less

The dealer did the flash for me originally. They have my VIN on file and if I ever need a re-flash its free. I changed the tune file to stock before I let them take it anyway.

I've thought about VAG-COM but it is way overpriced IMO. If you need something programmed you can usually find someone nearby that will do it for you. There are cheaper readers out there than the one I bought, but I liked that it had USB for updates (more future-proof) and was back-lit. It was also cheaper then one from Pep-Boys (including the sales tax that I would have had to pay locally).

Having my own is way more convenient than trying to find an Autozone. Since I'm stage 1 with stage 2 hardware I often get an O2 sensor fault at the track. Having my own means I don't have to leave the track and hunt down an auto store when out of town. Only once have I needed it immediately for an issue on track (flashing CEL), the others could have waited. I was glad I had it because we were able to figure out what was going on and repair it (well repair it enough to get back on track).

Sounds like restricted fuel or it's not getting spark on some cylinders. May need a tuneup/fuel filter.

With only 12k? I know Audi/VW suck but... 12k? :p

I didn't see it only had 12K :) Did one of your plugs come loose or a wire come off? The fact that it eventually starts but has a loss of power still points to fuel flow/spark issues. It could even be a bad fuel pump, O2 sensor, etc. Need to see what codes the computer is spitting out.

The fail is something on a brand new car breaking because its been raining out.

That's always electrical- if it cranks normally it's your plug wires. If it cranks slowly, it's probably your battery/terminals.

I doubt the rain was the cause of the failure. At least with only 12k.
High milage cars can have cracks on coils and other parts that could allow water to get in. But with only 12k its probably just one of many regular failures the OP will see during his VW ownership. ;)

How roughly did it run?

It might be as simple as a disconnected or leaking intake tube. This will cause boosted intake air to escape and cause your AFM to be wrong.

Happened to my friend's GTI.

I can imagine this being frustrating.

ANy chance something was dislodged/cracked when you had your ill-fated run-in with a curb during that snowstorm that bent up your wheels?
