Crysis Warhead crippled with DRM

I was considering buying this game too, not any more.

Edit - I guess the 500,000+ downloads of Spore in 3 days and the massive public outcry against Spore fell on deaf ears. Or maybe the EA executives are more brain dead than our federal senators.

Merged the Crysis Warhead DRM threads.

How many people really have many machines they just have to install this game on? I'd guess more than two is pretty uncommon. This type of DRM is probably there to limit people from passing the game around to all of their friends to play.

Yet again people who actually purchase the game get screwed over, while people who pirate have no issues. GG Crytek.

You only list one computer in your sig. Do you have nine more youplan on installing it on?

What about having to reformat? And yes, I have four computers that I would like to install games onto.

Without looking further into it, I'd imagine part of their motivation is to cripple the resale market.

Its not that we necessarily have multiple computers, we just like to be able to play the games we purchase today on PCs we'll have it 2 or 3 years. Reinstall the OS, lose an activation. Upgrade enough hardware, lose an activation. Given that gamers, particularly FPS gamers, upgrade their hardware pretty frequently, this is a very real issue.

Do you know how many times I've reinstalled BG2? If it'd had the DRM that Spore or Warhead have, I wouldn't be playing it still.

Can anyone confirm whether this crap is included in the Steam version?

Well said Bateluer.
I'd like to know about STEAM as well. I'm tempted to ship my copy of Warfare back to the publisher (not the retailer) with a note that says I don't agree with their craptacular EULA.

They (the crytek guys on the official forum) have been extremely tight lipped about it so far, telling people to wait for a FAQ that will explain everything... They've been telling people that for a few days now but no FAQ so far. Not really a good sign IMO. Any threads asking about it are promptly locked with that explanation, and to just wait it out.

I'm convinced that the steam version has SecuROM (in some form), just like bioshock did. They must believe that coming out and just admitting that will damage sales. It's just ridiculous trying to trick people like this. I hope that i'm wrong about that.. I really do.

Well, in the past three months I've gone through four video cards and two reformats. I'm looking at another reformat before Christmas, and probably an entire new computer next spring. So in the space of less than a year, I'd be going through more than the five installs they allow. And Crytek has been very quiet about what actually requires a new activation.

I've also had to reinstall Crysis multiple times. I like to use mods, which often don't agree with each other and make the game unplayable, requiring a reinstall.

See, I'm one of the unlucky bastards who bought Crysis at launch, giving my part to a dismally poor (terrible really, shocking) 1,000,000+ sales for the game. Unfortunately all those evil pirates out there stole a bunch of money and nudie pics of Cevat Yeri's mum, making him go on a vendetta against PC gamers.

STEAM version won't have an install limit, because steam doesn't have a system in place for that....

I'd hope...

The exe is basically the same, probably identical if you don't need a DVD in the drive.

The Install limit is tied to the registry key I believe, so you're probably looking at the same deal would be my guess.

Well, with Steam Bioshock having DRM and this being EA we're talking about, I'm making an educated guess that it's still there.

I don't know for a fact that it is, but it seems logical based on the above.

On a side note, I noticed that Spore has fallen off Amazons top 10 list, and the negative reviews are still piling up pretty well.

I hope that's the case as well. The bioshock steam release had the limited install deal, so it's likely, to say the least. Hopefully they'll just announce it soon so I can either forget about the game or buy it. I think they just want to wait until more people buy it so they don't cripple sales with DRM talk once it get out that they are still using SecuROM. If that's the case, it's a pretty slimy thing to do IMO.

Here's hoping for the best though!

From what I've read on the Steam forums the Steam version of Warhead do contain SecuROM initialization after the installation process is done.

So I wonder why they haven't just come out and announced it officially.. My only thought is they must think it would cause an uproar and are trying to hold out as long as possible so they can sell more copies to unsuspecting customers. I know I would be pissed it I bought it off steam only to find out later it has install limits and everything else that comes along with SecuROM.

lol i love how the 2nd post says 5 activations should last 2 years.... ive had to reformat more times then that in the past 8 months

Of course I'd prefer it had no DRM. I anxiously got off work tonight and bought the game. I simply bought the game and did nothing wrong, so I shouldn't have to worry about activation limits. But what will end up happening for me and I'd guess the vast majority of people is that there will be no problems with this limit. The activation scheme sounds similar to XP I think. Most of them are like that. I don't know why there is such outrage with stories like "what if someone reinstalls it three times in the first night? His $50 is gone!". Lets hear some facts first, before doing shit like spamming 1/5 reviews on a game we clearly have no legit reason to be reviewing as such.

I'm pretty sure you can email EA to give you a manual activation after you pass your activation limit. I've done it twice with Test Drive Unlimited. It's kind of annoying to wait another day to play a game, but by the 6th or 7th install, I don't think you'd be that anxious.
