Cryptocoin Mining?

What are your temps like with 2 290s and what kind of hash rate are you getting?

Mining pushes my temps more than anything else, but I'm still only seeing max GPU temps of 48C and VRM temps of 51C, even after the loop is warm and has been running consecutive days. Hashing at roughly 1.8Mh/s.

what voltage and clocks are you using on the 290s?

It's weird, but at default settings is where I'm getting my best rates. All I did was raise power limit. 947/1250. I haven't played with it much over the past few days to see if I can get better rates.

Keep in mind chimaxi83 is running water, which means his cards will boost higher than most will on air while mining, and his power is lower due to being cooler as well.

Assuming he's pulling around 650w, it is a fairly inefficient setup as far as kh/w goes but it's not like his payout will suffer much for it at the current price of LTC.

650W for 1,800 kHa/s is really efficient. 7950s need an OC to get 600 kHa/s, pulling around 250W.

50 Idle system.. 2 x 7950 + idle = 550W for 1,200 kHa/s.

Without OC they only pull about 500 kHa/s each at ~200W.

As soon as we saw aftermarket cooling on R290/X and seeing power use drop 40-50W, it really highlights how efficient the architecture is, but its ruined by running at 95C.

Is it mandatory to run at a modified 50% powertune for litecoin mining? Im planning on giving it a try, I'm currently at stock with my IceQ boos 7950, but I was wondering if running one of those 1GHZ/1450MHZ/1.15-1.19v/50% PT modded bios running around would give me a better hashrate/watt ratio than running it at stock with powertune +-20% and undervolting it a bit.

Any idea wat switch to use with cgminer to limit maximum temperature? I thought --temp-overheat does the trick, but apparently not.

I believe the +50% powertune is only for the 290(x) cards. I would think 20% would be fine for a 7950.

After some more digging in cgminer I am totally clueless how the settings work. --auto-gpu is supposed to adjust clock speeds if needed based on --temp-overheat and --temp-target, but it doesn't do anything.
--auto-fan does work a bit in that it ramps the fan to 100% when overheat is detected, but I would very much prefer if clocks were lowered instead.

Anyone has any idea?

Use --gpu-engine 662-947 if you want it to throttle clocks to meet a target temp.

Here's an excellent guide. http://holynerdvana.blogspot.no/2013/11/litecoin-mining-with-r9-290-and-r9-290x.html

The interesting thing is here:

Radeon HD 7950 gets ~600Khash/sec @ ~300W = 2.00KHash/Watt
Radeon R9 280X (HD 7970) gets ~700Khash/sec @ ~340W = 2.06KHash/Watt
Radeon R9 290 gets ~900KHash/sec @ ~330W = 2.73KHash/Watt
Radeon R9 290X gets ~1000KHash/sec @ ~360W = 2.71KHash/Watt

After a lot of googling I realized I can and obviously should use --gpu-auto and --gpu-engine at the same time. It finally works, but due to the nature of notebooks, it's throttling quite often. Maybe I can buy third party cooler.

Would you mind pasting your .conf for your 290's? or PM me your settings?

I'll be building my 2x290 mining rig this weekend.

Finally getting my 400R case today from NE that I ordered to setup the new mining rig. I've been running 2x 7950s in an Antec 300 with no room for the 7870. Once built later today, I'll fine tune thing and try to reach 6500 kH/s and just have them go for the rest of the winter. Temperatures on the GPUs really aren't bad at all this time of year. My 78XX cards average maybe 65C, and my 79XX cards seem to average 75-80C. Summer time is a different story.

By the way, how is Sapphire RMA? One my 7950s (VaporX) has a fan that seems to have lost its lube in the bearing, and has a lot of resistance to spinning. I figure the fan will go completely soon leaving only one operating. I'm debating if I should try to fix it manually, if possible, or send it for RMA (maybe after the LTC craze dies down after it becomes much less profitable).

Lol. Profit is gonna tank within a few weeks. Sucks for all the last minute bandwagon jumpers who are paying $300 for 7950s and $350 for 7970s. Double difficulty = half as many LTC per kH

Sucks if you plan to cash out instantly, doesn't matter if you're planning to hold for the next huge price increase.

That is the mentality that got me out of LTC in the first place.

I was mining for $10 a day on two cards, but wasn't selling and it was only going down... Diff was going up, price wasn't... By the time I gave it up I was down to like $7 a day with two cards. When in actuality if I had sold at $45~ per coin I was mining at like $100 a day. D:

I should clarify, I'm still holding my coins from March/April. I believe they'll go higher than ~$48. 🙂

Why or how does the difficulty fluctuate?

Difficulty scales with the total network hashrate. So more miners and more Radeons being brought online will cause difficulty to scale exponentially.

In other words, don't buy a bunch of new AMD cards and start mining Litecoin on them with expectation of a huge profit. It's not gonna happen unless the price goes up again.

Now, if you could figure out what will be the next great cryptocoin and get in on the ground floor... that's another story. It's probably safe to assume that it won't be one of the 50 or so Litecoin clones out there.

What I don't understand is why are new virtual currencies being invented. How can someone expect it would actually be used? I didn't even know something like litecoin existed week ago... I don't think even bitcoin can be used to buy stuff easily (like, go to whatever reasonably big webshop and try to look for anything else than a Paypal/CC payment option, good luck).
