Cruze diesel coming to America?!

I read that VW can not keep up with TDI production in the US - take rate is 25% on Golf & Jetta models.

This make huge sense for Chevy! Now if we can only get a Cruze hatch with the diesel!

Not really interesting. By the time it's in production its cost will probably be close to a Prius. Will that 50 mpg be city? Nope

Queue diesel fanboys who've never driven one going on about torque ratings.

If the price is close to Prius, yeah I think it's kind of senseless due to the incredible city fuel economy possible with current hybrid tech. For a dominantly highway driver it might make sense. Here in DFW I would haaaaaate having a diesel, the fuel is much more expensive and less readily available (next to nil in many suburbs).

No chance a $17K car is going to be $25k just by virtue of a diesel. I would expect a $2K premium at most over their 1.6L turbo motor. So maybe $19 - 20K to start.

Your deltas are off. This would be necessarily more expensive than a Cruze ECO, which in fact costs only $4k less than a Prius, and yes the diesel option will add a huge premium, as it does on other automobiles (e.g. VW).
they'll just make it a diesel hybrid
Nope, they won't. That will increase cost even further, plus Chevrolet has no experience whatsoever in hybrid technology at this price point.

A diesel Cruze is a fine idea if it can be done at a low cost. I don't think it can, though. Small-car gasoline hybrids have leapfrogged diesels in this country and I see no reason to think that won't continue.

Uh, not quite.

While yes it does cost a premium to get the diesel in the VW, it also means you are getting a higher end model of the car. You can't get a stripper golf TDI. The engine option ends up adding a bit under 2k. For a small diesel like this I would think GM could keep that closer to a 1k cost increase.

Uh, Chevy very well has hybrid technology. Volt, malibu, and the various other ones in the GM family like the upcoming Buick lacrosse.

I guess we'll see once it comes here (if it ever does) 😉 Do we know that they'll sell a stripper Cruze with diesel? I suspect this starts at least at $20k, it will be a premium above their ECO version and within spitting distance of a Prius (could be had earlier this year for under $22k before earthquake).

The Malibu isn't even available in hybrid anymore is it? The Volt's strange EV/hybrid technology is prohibitively expensive and noncompetitive.

I guess ultimately I forgot about Chevy hybrid tech because they have so damn few cars on the road with it.

The mild hybrid tech is back and improved as eAssist for 2012 models. Don't know if it will include the Malibu.

I'm getting 55mpg(US gal) average, and that's mostly short journeys of 6 miles two times a day, in my diesel. Who doesn't want that when it comes with 260ft/lb of torque, gets to 60 in 7 seconds and can do 140Mph?

Ok been following this thread and yes its going to be good that GM will put a small diesel into the Cruz... But what I`m wondering will it have to use DEF crap...? Emissions are whats killing diesels here in the US...

On a side note I hope this will jump start a bunch of other auto makers to start putting small diesels in their cars too...
