scientology freaks me out. until recently i didn't know much about it other than they have a lot of cash judging by some of the buildings i've seen. upon further research it seems like a text-book example of a cult. are there any scientologists here? what do you guys think about it in general?

i guess this isn't news related - have fun off-topic people....

The christians were a cult until they gained political power in Rome, so get used to it. It's here to stay as odd as us outsiders may view it. But Mr. Cruise is just another spoiled brat, and perhaps a bit crazy.

well one of the main things i have read that disturbs me about scientology is the purposeful seperation of new recruits and their families. any "religion" that does this should not be viewed as healthy. taking away support here is obviously just a means to gaining control of the individual.

Scientology doesn't scare me, yet... Until they start blowing up buildings, I don't care. I read the transcript of the conversation on drudge, and he is definetly a bit out there. I really don't care as long as he keeps putting out decent movies.

Anyone have a vid cap of this? I don't think the transcript can do justice to the pure awkwardness of this interview.

dude, any "religion" based on the ramblings of a former sci-fi pulp fiction writer is uber-fvcked up. seriously have you guys read any of that crap? it's like he got really high and wrote a sci-fi fantasy religion. guess it's no more goofy than an invisible omnipotnent diety, but at least they weren't created by a guy named L Ron Hubbard.

I bet War of the Worlds is a flop and he knows it will be but if he can get enough hype out before it opens in the U.S. the opening weekend box office $$ will be phenomenal.

Jesus, did anyone count how many times he said "Matt" during the interview?

You see, Matt....
But Matt....
Matt, here's the thing....

Matt...Matt...Matt....Matt...

Dude, it's a Spielberg picture. That dude hasn't had a flop since the 70's.

Scientology has many critics that view it as a cult. The 'church' has used threats and coersion to further its causes, including threatening and intimidating the IRS agents who were evaluating whether or not Scientology was indeed a church.

A little Google searching will turn up lots of good information if you care to look.

It cost Katie holmes a part in the second batman, so if it is publicity it has backfired.

L Ron hubbard was quoted early in his career saying no one will ever make major money in pennies per word written, and that religion is where it is at.... later he did just that

there is no doubt why scientology was founded :p

I refuse to pay to see War of the Worlds because of this nutjob. But, lucky for me, I know someone who works at the theater :)

 youre post maid know cents.

of course there is only one so far. the use of "any" in that context is an expression. but if there were another religion based on the ramblings of a former sci-fi writer i would probably crap on it just the same.

yes i am all mighty, and i shalt smite thee.
