Cruical Doesn't Know What Chips They Use

I called Crucial today to see what chip they were using for the Crucial Ballistix series of ram.

I naturally assumed these were Micron D9 Chips since the PC Community at large across the internet says this is what Crucial uses.

At Crucial a manager told me today they don't know what they use, and if it is the D9 chip they don't know it's manufactured always with D9.

So how does a community of PC geeks know something that Crucial themselves should know and doesn't I asked, the reply simply was, not sure...

A told the manager I found it hard to believe that a company as big as Crucial doesn't know what they are using, and as enthusiast memory this type of information should be readily available on the site, or from Tech Support.

Anyhow I was shocked to say the least at the response Crucial gave me today, not knowing.

I was told by this manager that he was going to look into this, and see why Crucial doesn't seem to have this information, and why it's not listed on the site as well for marketing purposes along side the other specification information.

How could Crucial be so clueless is what I'd like to know...

Crucial probably didn't know what to tell you at that time because the bids hadn't come in yet.
They're just like everyone else, the cheapest supplier gets the order.

The PC geeks are telling you what they've seen in their experience.

Crucial isn't going to be quotes as saying they use any one particular brand because that's subject to change.

My dad works at Micron and it really varies with supply and price. If you buy Corsair or any other memory it is the same thing....they can't guarantee a certain IC chip......

I wasn't aware that Crucial had multiple suppliers.

This person told me NO one in the company knows this information, he said no one in Crucial has such knowledge of this information, and I found that very odd.

It's probably company policy to not detail or list the chips used because then nerds can't give them any added grief.

Besides, the average customer service clerk is going to have a hard enough time telling DDR2-667 from DDR2-800.

You think all the RAM chips come from one company in the world? if that was the case, RAM prices would never fall.

I know about chips coming from different companies, but I thought with this higher-end memory of theirs there might be some control on this, and keeping the chips always at D9.

Somehow I doubt he actually knows whether anyone in the company has this information (unless he has knowledge of what 20,000+ employees know about their products).

Managers tell those people what to do, and what to say.

But managers often don't know what those people do and what they say. I'm sure the guy that ordered the chips, designed the external circuitry around the chips, and/or soldered the chips onto PCBs probably knows what chips they were. Doesn't mean his or her manager will.

Yes I understand all of this, but three different people in the company also told me it wasn't within their policy to tell the public what chip they used either, which I thought was a bit odd.

No, no one in the company knows what chips they use at a given moment. They just buy from the lowest bidder. if teh D9 chip happens to be in teh lowest bid, then there will be a batch with the D9 chip. It's like when you buy CD-R's. One day they could be TY's, the other day it could be some Tiawan brand, yet they both still have the same logo on them.

Have you connected the dots yet? they do not tell you because it is not a specification. if they said it would have the D9 chip, then all of them must have the D9 chip and nothing else.

Well Mushkin told me since making the XP2-8500 ram, they've always used D9 chips, so if Mushkin can do it I know very well that Crucial can to, and stick to one, or several suppliers for this particular chip to meet the needs of their higher-end specs...

I posted this in off topic because this wasn't a memory issue related to using my computer, like trying to fix something etc...

Off Topic because I called Crucial to get a reply, and didn't get one over the phone, so more of an off topic rant over the company and staff not knowing their product, etc...

Anyhow I'll post it there next time.

When did I say that there was only one supplier of memory chips in the world.

Now, name any manufacturer of the chips Crucial uses besides Micron.
