crucial ballistix versus corsair XMS

I keep hearing the Crucial ram aren't usually reliable, though I have not a single issue with my set yet.

But there's nothing else like Micron Crucial for OCing adventures. ^_^

The Crucial will OC higher, especially if run at CAS 6, though.

I'd get neither though.

Here's my cheaper 2x2 GB pick: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820146731

Actually, the Crucial is the cheapest at $41 without mail in rebate or any other fuss. Overall, doesn't it have the best CAS latency at 4? Disappointing. It looks like there is an inexplicable continuous failure for a number of buyers at Newegg. I guess i'll go with the Mushkin. What do you think of G Skill by the way. I got those a long time ago for an older rig and they have been unstoppable.

The Crucial is D9JKH, not the infamous D9GMH.

So OCing isn't that good really.

Only real difference is that unlike PSC, it scales somewhat with voltage, so if you don't mind killing your Crucial, you can reach slightly higher speeds with CAS 6 it seems.

CAS 5 results aren't generally very good, so i'd prefer PSC or ProMOS-based kits as you can clock well without needing lots of killer voltage.

When i say CAS 6, i'm talking DDR2-1150+ range...otherwise it's not worth it usually.
So in short, if not an extreme RAM overclocker, look for something PSC for good value & OCing at low voltage.
Qimonda for good CAS 4 (G.Skill Pi Black 800/900 4-4-4 kits)
ProMOS for uber high end (G.Skill Pi Black 1000 4-5-4 & 1200 5-5-5 kit)

For everything else, there's PSC (or Mastercard).

There's a bunch of other kits i'd consider for <$55.

I personally like Mushkin for their support/warranty/overclockability, so i'd likely be getting the last kit i linked to if i was buying some.

But if you are looking for the absolute cheapest possible (assuming rebates don't come back of course), then the Corsair you looked at or the G.Skill for same price would be fine.

Technically, if you don't OC, value RAM is fine...

Hmmm, I've heard about the D9JKH and D9GMH, but how do I know which I have? I didn't notice it on my ram set, nor in CPUZ.

And what is this "PSC" and "ProMOS"?

my favorite kit right now is this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820231166

got one in my rig with a pair of ballistix 2x1gb kits (the good OCing ones) all speced for 1066 operation. currently running 5-5-5-15 at 891MHz 1.8v. i just ordered another 3 of that kit to get rid of the crucial kit and have 8gb in this rig plus a couple spare kits for if i get a quad+mobo now, or if i ever need another kit later after DDR3 prices drop to the point where they start pushing DDR2 prices up per gig the way DDR1 is now. @ 972 5 egg reviews, 122 4 egg reviews, a customer choice award, and counting, i figure it's probably a good bet the kits will all do as well as the one i have now is. under stress testing conditions this kit went up to 1200mhz at 2.1v using dividers and FSB OCs to get it there. tested memtest86+ stable for a day. probably got a really good kit, but with results like that i figure ordering 3 more isnt going to be a bad decision on my part lol

ed: the box it comes in is also pretty. I half want to prop it up on top of my case to show it off

PSC = Powerchips Semiconductor Corp.

Most enthusiast-oriented 2x2 GB DDR2 kits use their ICs.

ProMOS

What, you didn't think all RAM was made by Micron, did you? 😛

Micron is just one of many big players.

Companies don't generally tell you what IC they are using as they sometimes change it for their benefit...

If your Crucial is the 2.2v kit, it's likely D9GMH.
If it's 2.0v, it's likely D9JKH.

Looks like I have the good stuff. 🙂

But even though I know they're OCable in either case, I leave my ram at standard timings and 1.8V.

If the options are limited to those two kits, I'd buy the Corsair every time over the Crucial Ballistix.
The Corsair is volted at the proper JEDEC DDR2 standard of 1.8-1.9v.
Crucial has been a good company and their value memory is fine. But their Ballistix line has had some reliability issues.

[disclaimer] Not every Ballistix user has experienced problems.
But the feedback over the last year or two has been negative enough that I wouldn't buy it.
Yes, I have been one of the Ballistix owners that experienced SMD (sudden memory death) 😛

Everyone's advice has really been helpful. It looks like I am going to stay away from the Crucial ram.

Since G.Skill has treated me well in the past, I am going to stick with it (and try Mushkin another day).

So I can't figure out which of these 2 I should go with?

It would seem to make sense to go with the one with a CAS latency of 4. Hope N7 chimes in again.

These look really cool as well (I may just splurge for the extra $5):

I already posted my preferred choices, but if you want to go G.Skill, in order of binning/hierchy, you have Pi Black > HK > PQ, though i suspect the linked Pi Blacks & HKs are identical kits other than the heatspreader design...

That said, who knows what would OC the highest...that's mostly luck.
