The burnout ballistix were the d9gmh variety that overclocked amazingly well. These are the new high density d9's that dont overclock as well, but dont burnout!
How can I tell if I have the d9gmh in my rig now? Currently running 4x1GB Ballistix 6400 @ 2.2v..
If the specified voltage is 2.2v then you probably have the "burnouts". I had to rma all 4 2.2v sticks of my 1gb ballastix after about 1 year. Crucial's customer service is great though. They sent me the new 2.0v revisions in less than a week. As stated earlier they do not overclock nearly as well.

Aren't they very warm to touch?

How cool? Most of the memory I used recently (including some 2.20-2.25V sticks) was the same temp as the plastic of a PCI slot. Not these sticks. They are running at about 15-20C above the ambient temp .... you can still hold your finger on one (continuously), but if they ran 5-10C degrees hotter one would definitely be compelled to pull the finger away the moment one touches it. These sticks are the hottest component in my system (incl E7300, ATI4830 and 5 HDDs).
