This is my take on it:

Jen saw that only death freed Li mu bai, the only time when he was true to himself and confessed his love to Shu Lien was when he was dying. Jen realizes she made many mistakes and caused the death of li mu bai, she cannot be happy with lo since he is a han, she ruined her family's name, etc. The only way she can be true to herself is in death.

So the reason I don't get it is because I'm a mouth-breathing, imbred hick from midweastern America, right? Sounds like a cultural bias there. I've never been to China (to a bumpkin such as myself any land east of Russia is China) so I had no way of knowing that they only make movies with no coherency or plot elements, being the dumb hillbilly that I am. I guess I'll have to stick to goat roping and WWF from now on. Thanks for your take on the movie.

<< nothing is offensive as an actor opening his mouth and someone elses crap flying out of it. >>

Hahaha this reminds me of a commercial where they were making fun of dubbing. A guy was making some big comment and his words were'nt matching up with what was saying at ALL. Then the other guy next to the first talking, takes the microphone and he talks for like 8 seconds and all that comes out at the very end is 'INDEED'! in a really badly done american voice. I nearly lost it. Thanks for the reminder!

I personally really enjoyed the movie. I was VERY happy that it was sub'd. I watch tons of anime so watchin something sub is like second nature at this point to me. I went with a few friends and they all followed the movie very well and they dislike subs (whenever they are over and i watch anime it has to be dubbed). But they really enjoyed the movie as well. If the movie was dubbed it would have been horrible like those old Godzilla shows where the dudes mouth is going a mile a minute and all you hear is some dumbass yellin a one liner.

If you ever watch those chinese drama shows on tv, a lot of times they have different people doing the voices than the acting. Of course, that's not as bad cause at least the mouth is in the right place. Most dubbed acting is pretty bad, though it can be done well. In dramas and thoughtful movies though, you lose a lot in the translation, and that's even more pronounced (no pun intended) if it's dubbed.

As far as the plot goes, well, it was a fairly typical chinese movie, if a bit overblown. But then, a lot of cultures are into the overblown tragedies.

I don't know what you guys are talking about. Jen does not kill herself. Those who have mastered the "flying" arts cannot commit suicide by jumping off a bridge.

I liked most of the movie but hated the ending... I know this sounds sappy If I am going to pay as much money as movies run today to watch a movie, I want a happy ending... ;)

I think my fav character was Michelle Yoe??? Is that her name??? I liked her and Lo...

SO Missus you want an ending that would have totally ruined the movie because it would not have fit at all? Alright lets have all movies have happy endings so that it is just like real life.

BTW I am just giving you a hard time. I just happen to disagree with paying for happy endings when they don't fit the movie(My gf felt the same as you)

Some people don't like subtitles. It isn't because they are ugly Americans or anything. I understand that some people would rather relax during a movie, and let it go. Not everyone is a critical viewer.

I, personally, would rather get more from a movie and watch subtitles. IO am more of a critical viewer, though. I have watched a few movies both dubbed and with subtitles. There is so much more dialogue in subtitles. I think it is because English is a 'lazy' language, and English speakers tend to speak slowly. Our mouth and facial muscles are not as developed as we do not have many sounds in English that require such control.

I saw a dubed version of Princess Mononoke in theater and loved it. Then I saw CTHD (non-dubed) in the same theater and didn't love it. Coincidence? More like Crouching Tiger sucks!!!

dubbing can ruin a movie but it doesn't have to. For example: Hardboiled. I wouldn't want to have to hear that in dub because we already have Lethal Weapon 1. The Seventh Seal would also lose some of its flair if it was dubbed. As would Seven Samurai.

well everyone has a different take on the movie ...

i think jen yu (the girl who jumped off the bridge at the end) loved chow-yun fatt. she couldn't save him after all she had to for her and felt guilty when she was making out with her bf/barbarian. so in the end she killed herself. but that's only my take of it ... :)

Yes, dubbing sucks.

What also sucks is that Michelle Yeoh and Chow Yun-Fat don't speak Mandarin properly either. My Mandarin is suck, but I've lived in Beijing for a while, and after getting used to that, listening to Michelle Yeoh butcher the language just made me cringe. Zhang Ziyi was perfect of course. ;)

Anyways, I thought the movie was pretty good, but doesn't live up to the hype.

lirion,

I wouldn't call you a hick, nor an ugly American; but I do think that
Americans in general take too seriously the attitude that they should
be able to "get" everything they are exposed to the first time.

Crouching Tiger has great coherency and plot for those who have become
somewhat used to storytelling styles that are different than the standard
hollywood fare. One thing to understand is that other parts of the world
do not feel the need to create a "happy ending" for their stories as
much as us Westerners do. A benefit of living in a free country is that
we can allow ourselves exposure to those other interpretations for the
opportunity to learn new ways of looking at things.

IMO, the movie was meant to end they way it did to make you stop and think
about what had gone on in the story and what meaning it has to the final
result. Also, even though there were action scenes, this was not supposed
to be an action oriented movie.

While the quality of dubbing (and the care that studios put into dubbing
projects) has improved in recent years, the problem inherent in dubbing
efforts is that they cannot completely match the acting being done on-
screen. Subtiltes are not a perfect solution, but one of the better
methods used to attempt to allow the story to be understood without
doing disservice to the original acting effort.

To try to answer your other questions.

As pdiddy said, she jumped (to whatever result...) because her life had ended
up too complicated to be able to make the simple choice to run off with Lo possible.

Lo's wish could not be fulfilled, because the Jen he wanted to spend forever with
no longer existed. She had been thru too much both of truimph and grief;
and had her life manipulated and planned for by too many other people,
to ever truly again be the innocent girl he had loved. Whether she lived
or died from that jump is not important, as it was symbolic of her making
the only choice she saw open for here, which was to free herself by turning
her back to all the secret lives she had lived before.
