Crossfire + Lightboost = ?

ToastyX released his great Strobelight tool last Friday that enables 2D and 3D Lightboost on both Nvidia and AMD cards. I got it to work with my VG248QE and it looks amazing. I could see a small improvement from 60hz to 144hz but the motion lag is all but non-existent with 120hz Lightboost (brightness at 50%). Borderlands 2 looks awesome from what I can tell so far but even with my 7970@1260/1500 it isn't fast enough to hit 120hz consistently.

So I tried to enable Crossfire with my 30" plugged in via DVI in the first card and the 24" plugged into the 2nd card via DVI but the 24" doesn't register with Windows.

Is Crossfire still limited to all monitors being plugged into the 1st card? If that is the case, is there any way to run both monitors from a single card? Mini-DP adapter maybe?

I'm 95.6317% sure that it IS limited to the 1 card, yes.

You could always try an adapter, but the problem is that it might potentially add a little bit of lag of its own. You'd also need an ACTIVE mini-DP to Dual Link DVI adapter, which costs up to 100 beans or more. And that's a not-insignificant amount to be putting down in cases where you may not be happy with the outcome. Up to you whether you want to risk it

I wonder if there's a way to make the Lightboost hack work with DisplayPort...? That would solve the issue I believe

Crossfire still and always has required all displays to be on the primary card. In your case, you'd be best served if your 30" has a displayport option to use. If not, then you would need the active adapter, and I'm not sure which monitor would be better served by that solution.

If you go for it, please let us know what works!

EDIT: after a little looking around I found that the BenQ monitors have a DP input, but I have yet to confirm that it supports the Lightboost tech. If it does, then one of them will likely be my next monitor so I can see what all the fuss is about.

^jack, the ASUS which the OP owns also has DP, but like you I have no idea whether the Lightboost hack requires him to use the DVI input

Ya, I have the LP3065 with only DVI inputs.

I'm thinking the 30" might be better off on the adapter but I'll have to research a little to see if it adds input lag. This is getting to be an expensive experiment. :(

Minor update, according to ToastyX, DP is compatible with his Strobelight program... so maybe using the DP would work?

You just made my day. :D DP cable is a lot cheaper than an active adapter.

I'll pick up a cable and see how it works. Anyone know a brick-n-mortar with mini-DP to DP cables?

I strongly encourage you to verify what I found for yourself (I found it here: http://www.monitortests.com/forum/T...Utility-for-AMD-ATI-and-NVIDIA?pid=520#pid520), but maybe you want to confirm with ToastyX yourself. Then use Curcuit Assembly for your cable or some other verified DP cable place. The stupid issues with poorly made DP cables might give you a poor experience before you even know if it is working.

But good luck!!
