Ok, I have decided to finally build a new rig to replace the aging one sitting beside me. I will use this computer for some pretty heavy gaming, but also many other typical tasks. Overclocking is planned, but not to dangerous levels. I have a 17" CRT monitor that I can use right now, but I am planning on purchasing a 19" LCD sometime in the future. I also have the mouse/keyboard and speakers/OS all taken care of. After much research, this is what I have decided to buy. Is anything out of place or innappropriate for my usage?
CPU -------- A64 Venice 3200+ $200
HDD -------- Barracuda 7200.8 250Gb $145
Mobo ------- DFI LanParty Ultra-D $145
RAM -------- OCZ Value VX $120
Gfx card --- Rosewill X800XL $270
PSU -------- OCZ Modstream 450W $90
Case ------- Thermaltake Armor $155
DVDRW --- Liteon SOHW 1673 $60
Total: $1185
One thing I am worried about is the need to update the bios on my motherboard to use the venice core cpu. Will I have to take it in to a store and pay them to do it for me? If so, I might just get a cheaper winnie now. Thanks for your time.

I suggest if your doing some heavy gaming get a CRT monitor 19". Crt are better for gaming better textures and quality is good plus later on you dont get dead pixels (duh) lol, thats what i think for a monitor that you should get, but other than that it looks good.

it's pretty good.

19" lcds are same native resolution as 17" lcds. go 20" or 17" because 12x10 on a 19" dosent look as good. a dell ultrasharp is pretty good lcd, but if you are really hardcore about gaming and int bothered by the increased eye strain, but a crt.

With the new LCD's with much improved response times, etc., the difference is much smaller gaming wise. plus the space, heat, etc. are so much better with a quality LCD!;) As for pixels......I've got 4 LCD's now, had one with one dead pixel, had it replaced because i got the extra coverage for $15.

Basicly, it comes to choice, but I'll never go back to CRT's.....:)

I suggest a L90D+ for a nice gaming LCD.

I advise against the rosewill GFX card. I've heard of a lot of people getting burned by thier products. Get the Sapphire X800 XL.

Really? Hadn't heard much bad about them......I never bought one but read all over the place that Rosewill is just NewEggs house brand and that they are BB ATI's just remarked with Rosewill....

A64 3200+ Venice ? are they availible already ?
I've yet to see one.
I was about to buy 3200+ Winchester , and if Venice is out maybe I should get that instead

You can preorder them from multiple places like Monarch and their shipping dates vary......some as early as this week.

There are alot of really good LCDs for gaming nowadays, CRT's are just for people that don't want to admit that power abusing, cancer causing, desk hogging screens aren't the best anymore. IMO since LCD's are brighter they look BETTER than CRTs.

i have a LCD and a crt and i like my crt a thosand times better is wayy more clearer my LCd seems to wash out color and i got a DAM RED DEAD PIXEL which i always focus on which pisses me off so i dont even use it anymore and i still love my 5 year old crt monitor tha tonly cost me 70 bucks !

the only thing LCD are good for is space thats it

Aperture grille monitors whoop @ss, better than shadw mask, also have anti reflective coating and some other cool stuff, Sony trinitrons are the $hit!! w00t!!!

This is the part number : "OCZ4001024WV3DCK" it is available at newegg monarch and atacom, with the latter being the cheapest at about $115 sans shipping. LCDs are only better because they save space? Ok, thats one of the reasons I want it though... That is not part of what I am buying now though, since I will be using my old crt for a while.

BTW, rosewill is not a good brand? I also heard that they were identical to the other offerings. At a $30 price difference, I think I will go for it.

The venice core processors are not out yet, though, I might get one when they do if I dont get impatient, or decide to go with a winnie do to the bios issue. Any other suggestions on how to resolve this bios update issue? Can I get the store I buy it from to flash it for me?

Get a good 19" CRT its cheaper by far I suggest an NEC Multisync (about $250) or a Samsung 997DF (about $200). Even high quality LCDs will ghost if you strain them enough (which future games will start to do), pixels die and make the moniter look horrible, brighter isn't nessisarily better (causes a fair amount of eye strain), and for all but the most expensive LCDs color repproduction is sub par.

WOW! Must have been a lot of people that bought cheap, subpar LCD's...........LOL! To each his own I suppose................I can't go back to CRT's............LOL!

Hmmm, FPS directly related to your GPU and refresh rate........16ms = 100Mhz Refresh rate........they are now making 6ms LCD's.......

Color is where CRT still wins.

Yea 6ms...first of all expensive second of all your eyes will get hurt that that fast on an ms and if your using dvi.....
