How do you know it was written well before it?
The last copyright stamp is 2004

The date described in the story matched.
Could it be the family or friend of the caver edited it and published a story?

I hate to think that the author said he would be going back to the cave. May be he had some accident and could ot finish the story

Do a Google search for "Mel's Hole." There's a bunch of links for it. It's supposedly located somewhere on Manastash Ridge which isn't too far from my parent's home. :Q

Honestly, either someone read the caving story and decided to give it a ludicrous ending, hence the way the pdf starts spiraling further and further into the unbelievable. Or someone read the pdf and thought it would be cool to make a webpage out of it that was far more believable than the original story. I'd just like to know which it was, the chicken or the egg :).

Oh and I have some scary stories, but they all kind of suck because I'm a bad story teller... something about being too honest or whatever. My other problem is that I always forget details about my own stories, kind of weird I suppose, but I can never really recall exactly how things happened.

Wow that cave story was really good, even though the unexplainable events are probably fictional. I like how the 2 photos of the room conveniently did not come out.

true story.
I'm 14, sister, brother-in-law and my folks buy this 21 acre orchard. This was owned by some folks for 50+ years, with a two story sandstone house with a full basement, little rooms, creaky stairs. On the day the old folks move out, she drops dead right there at the car.
we start working on the place, cleaning it up and making it livable for my sister to move in. Some kids apparently break in and take some tools, so I stay over there for a few nights to watch things.
I am sleeping downstairs on a sofa, and about midnight, I hear noises upstairs. I am in a room off the hall with the only stairs, so there is no way anything got past me. All of a sudden, I hear heavy footsteps upstairs, and a clatter of somebody running down those creaky stairs!
I turn on the flashlight and look, and absolutely no one is there. That was a long night, let me tell you;)

The "haunting" continued for several years. It is quiet now, or at least my sister does not talk about it.

This one night, around 2:30 in the morning, my mom and dad and I were alone in the house. I slept on the third floor in our renovated attic. The door at the bottom of the stairs always stuck and made a loud noise when it opened.

Mom was in bed when she noticed that the bathroom light had just turned on. At first she just thought that one of the other kids got out of bed on the 2nd floor when she realized that none of the other kids were home. She got up, left dad sleeping there and checked it out. There was nothing weird that she noticed so she came to the bottom of the stairs leading to the 3rd floor and opened the door. I woke up when she did that and she called out to me wondering if I had been out of bed. I told her I hadn't although she pretty much knew I hadn't since the door didn't open. I came down to see what was going on.

I had just made it to the bottom of the stairs when we heard the dog yelp from the 1st floor. It sounded like when you accidentally stepped on her tail, just a quick noise. Mom ran to dads room and got him up and I started downstairs but mom made me wait. Dad quickly got the gun and he went down. The dog was cowering in the corner of the kitchen scratching at the door looking totally afraid of something. Weirdest yet, the microwave was on with nothing in it. Dad turned it off and made a full tour of the house. No doors were opened, no windows were opened. Nothing had been touched and nobody but us has keys. That was the single most freaky incident in that house. I still get a little nervous thinking of that night.
