How do you get the rebate?
Do they give it back to you automatically?

The rebate is credited to your account on every statement.
Yup... I love this card for gas. The credit is right in the statement every month. I am not sure either if you really have to be a member. My fiancee is and that's how we got ours.

No offense but generally gas cards are stupid. Example:

Shell sells gas at $1.50
RaceTrac sells same gas at $1.43

With shell card you save 3%! Yaye, you've just saved $.045. You're still paying more for the gas, but need to go through the hassel of an extra bill and an otherwise useless card in your wallet.

My advice is buy from the cheapest gas station you can (all gas is essentially the same anyway across the board, quality wise) and use an independent credit card that gets you points. I use mbna elite rewards. I get the equivalent of $.01 per dollar I spend which I can use for hundreds of different gift certificates (at real stores, like best buy and home depot, not crappy places you never go to). I also buy the cheapest gas I can find. I feel pity for people who will pay sometimes up to a dime/gallon more at Texaco because they believe they're getting better gas than Cowboys across the street.

instead of getting 1% back on your gas purch, and having ot wait for points to accumulate, you can just use a gas card that works across the board, like the aaa 5% gas, 1% purch, or chase's freedom/perfect and get 3% gas 1% perch..

as for gas being same across the board.. i dun kno about that, but not like i'm gonna change anyone's views w/ a blanket statement shouting my opinion. look around and find a good deal. my parents get 5% back from chase because they where a charter member, and i'm peeved that they only gave me a 3% card.. we were both former chase shell card members.

anyway, i'd rather use a card that awards you for using their card, imo anyway..

Yeah I just read about the AAA card. And yes most of these gasolines are the same. There are a LOT of distributers of gasoline to the consumer and they all get their gas from a limited few refiners. There are STRICT regulations for gas. If you think you're getting your money's worth paying a dime per gallon extra for BP vs. cowboy, for instance, you're deluding yourself and more importantly losing a lot of money.

I guess it ties in to the mentality of people with engines that require 87, but they put in 89 or 91 anyway. They simply don't know any better. I know a girl who swears that her car doesn't run properly unless it's got texaco in it. Yeah right

gizbug,

To answer two of your questions:

1) There is NO ANNUAL FEE for the Chase Freedom Card because:
It's waived the first year
Afer the first year, as long as you make at least 9 purchases a year it's WAIVED.

2) Your rebates are credit back to your account every month ... much better than CitiBank Dividend which makes you wait until you reach $100 ($10,000 in charges).

The Shell card I have nets me 5% back (866getshell.com -- this is linked from the shell.com page, "Shell Mastercard from Citi cards") so with your example figures, the Shell gas ends up being cheaper by half a cent per gallon. Plus, it's a better deal for me since I've got a Shell station down the street, saving me a trip to and from the cheap stations to save the $1.50 or so (which end up being used up during the trip!). But you're right in using another rewards card for everything else since they're all basically 1%. But if I can get a "reward" of 5% instead of just 1%, then I'll be sure to do that.

I would get the Shell CitiBank gas card but I prefer Chevron gas.

I used to use a Discover card, but as already stated the Chase Freedom/Perfect pays the rebates as credits on the next bill which is a vastly superior way to get the money back without jumping thru hoops some rebate cards require.

This is what I got. I orignally had a couple gas cards for the places I frequent. But, they don't give ma any deals. So I got this card and cancelled my gas cards. I use the AAA visa only for gas purchases. Credits are noted on your monthly statements.
