I want to buy a portable mp3 player.
Which on should I get, Nomad 30G for $299 or IPOD 30G for $399?
Please help me with the pros and cons.

30 GB will get you what, 5000 songs? i think that is plenty. by the time you get tired of your playlist the songs will be ancient

LOL!!!!
The capacity is not at my concern.
I just need the mp3 player to have a good quality, good features, support future format, and of course reliable.

I'd rather have the ipod because its smaller than the Nomad. Also I heard that the nomad's software is a little bit harder to use than the ipods. Hell i'd be happy with either one of those mp3 players

You can get a Nomad 2 LX, USB 2.0 enabled, 20GB, for $199 at Wal Mart. IMO, that's pretty much the best hard disk MP3 player value, save for the refurbed iPods from Apple.

The iPod is a better product for a higher price. If you have the means I highly reccomend you pick one up. The Zen is a good deal for a large capacity MP3 player.

You actually get more in the box when you buy any iPod except for the smallest capacity drive. Creative doesn't include a remote with their Zen, I don't know about the NX though, you also get a base/recharging station with the iPod as well as the all important warranty, one that is 4 times longer than the one Creative bundles with their player.

I think alot of you are getting confused with the old Zens. Theres a new line of Zens being released (and MuVos), called the NX line. They are significantly better than the older ones.

Love my 15GB Ipod, had the Zen and the file menus and software were terrible, plus it was a little bigger than the Ipod. Overall, I like the Ipod the best of all...

Longer battery life, smaller, sleeker design and hopefully a better interface...sounds good. But can you use it as an external hard drive without having to run any drivers? If I were going to buy a hard drive based MP3 player right now, Apple would get my money. Add the price of a Creative Labs remote to the price of an equally sized NX and you've got yourself an iPod. And don't let me get started on the warranty.

I'd get the Nomad without even considering IPOD.
Why? It's the newest player on the market!
Now if Apple releases IPOD2, that would be different.

Or at least if they reduce the price of IPOD... It's about time, since it's way too overpriced now (check the other competitors' pricing)

Quick & easy comparison: USB2 vs USB1.1, 60GB vs 30GB, etc.

I like my old Nomad since it's built like a TANK

I don't know what this "IPOD2" is but Apple has already released three generations of iPods. The third generation has USB 2.0 support. And built like a tank? :) lol. Agreed. But looks and weighs like a tank also.

I don't know why so many people complain about the Zen's weight and size. Yes, compared to the Ipod it's definately bigger and heavier.. but it's nothing to complain about. I've had mine for 5 months now and I can't say that it's heavy at all and it's small enough to fit in my jacket pocket anyway

I just started looking for an mp3 player also. Although the ipod does have the stylish looks and size/weight....I'm willing to bet the Zen NX has much better sound quality. I read a review comparing the e-digital Odyssey 1000 to the ipod and they said after using both for a few months the odyssey 1000 had much better sound quality than the ipod. As the Zen and Zen NX have signal-to-noise ratios of 98dB, and the Odyssey 1000 is 90dB I'm pretty sure that is higher than any of the other mp3 players(Apple will not even release the SNR of the ipod). I mean, Creative has been in the sound game for years...it only makes sense. Add to that a 14 hour(and removable to use extras!) battery life vs. the advertised "over 8 hours" of the ipod, AND the $200(!!!) price difference....and I think the choice is clear.

I plan to pre-order the Zen NX tomorrow. does anyone know when these are shipping?

-Kevin

P.S. - I have also heard negative things regarding the touch sensitive wheel, and the fact that the included case obscures the controls.

P.P.S - Does anyone own the e-digital Odyssey 1000? This looks interesting too...expecially the voice navigation! Any reviews?

How are you getting a 30GB iPOD for $399? I have one and they're $499. If you can get it for $399 do it, it's a great deal.

lordkev,

By the way...I came across this third-party program that lets you use the Nomad Zen as a normal hard drive...a gripe many people have had with the file transfer.

It does, but not exactly as seemless as the iPod. I have a licence for Notmad for my Zen, and you still have to install Creative's drivers for the Zen as well as the Notmad Explorer program.

I saw a review of the Odyssey comparing it to the new iPod on TechTV's Fresh Gear, but being an "Apple whore" that he is, the reviewer said the iPod was still the better of the two.
