Last week in Egypt, a group of Russian photographers apparently climbed the Great Pyramid of Giza—hiding from guards for four hours after closing time before beginning the ascent. Climbing the pyramid, one of the photographers claims, carries a punishment of one to three years.

What's with his hands in that pic? I'd guess gloves, but it just looks freaking weird.

Ya, those would be gloves he's wearing. I did a double-take when I saw them, too.

Hmm, the comments for the article are interesting. On the one hand there are some pretty cool views but on the other hand there's a reason people aren't allowed to climb them.

I just hope this isn't a common occurrence. I can't tell if those are heiroglyphics or graffiti on the stone he's sitting on. Or heiroglyphic graffiti.

To be fair, those are really nice pics, a perspective I've never had the pleasure of seeing.

while I agree, the pyramids ARE sitting out there in the fucking dessert, subject to heat/wind/sandstorms/rain/etc.

Maybe they could figure out how much activity is "safe" for them and issue a very limited number of climbing permits. Make a little extra dosh without allowing them to get overrun.

I mean, if they just allowed people to climb them whenever you'd have an issue, not just in terms of potential damage and graffiti but also aesthetically, because they'd probably be covered in tourists nonstop.

Those photos are quite fantastic... I hope they were out of the country before posting them.

The pyramids must be bigger than I thought, I feel like a group of people climbing one wouldn't exactly be a 'where's waldo'.

They are pretty damn big, standing next to the bottom row I was not even as tall as the stones on the first row.

They are also not preserved at all. Nothing in egypt's ancient temples are preserved or have people cleaning/protecting them. They might as well climb all over it, people are etching graffiti and shit into the temple pillars anyway.

Shit, when I was there I saw a group of morons carving their names into one of the pillars and some "guard" or whoever was working at the temple just came up to them and shook his head, and shooed the kids away. No fines, no slap on the wrist, nothing.

I'm sure they paid off some people as well.

You don't need to. Nobody "guards' the pyramids and there's no fences preventing you from getting in.
