On 20/20 tonight they said these "Super Fires" in the western US have grown so widespread every year that they have lost the ability to stop them, and they are burning so hot that the forests they are destroying won't grow back for several centuries. They made it seem like in the next 20 years the entire western half of the US will be transformed into some eerie Mad Max scenario.

Glad I live on the east coast.

The reason why Super Fires exist are because we've been suppressing fires for a LONG time. Ironic huh? Basically, fires are supposed to happen, but with our 'OMG ENVIROMENT LOL" attitude, we basically stopped a lot of natural fires from happening. Thus, too much overgrowth, and BOOM, we get super fires that we can't stop and sterilizes the area.

It has nothing to do with "OMG ENVIRONMENT LOL". For a LONG time we have known that fires are supposed to happen and part of the natural ecology of much of the west. The problem was people who wanted to exploit the resources (like Gifford Pinchot), not preservationists. You can't sell a burnt log. Learn your history

I can't believe that anyone believes any of the BS in all 3 of these posts.

This is desert scrub land on fire, not mismanaged forests. Take it to P&N.

Um, desert scrub land is supposed to burn on occassion as well.......

Yes, but desert scrub land has not been fire-suppressed for logging purposes (or any other such "resource exploitation" unless you want to count housing).

I woke up this morning and my car was covered in ashes. I live far away from the fire too. I heart goes out to those families that lost their homes.

I expect that I'll be back to normal within a few days of the air clearing. We're going to see about leaving town for the weekend though because of the air quality.

God knows what kind of shit we're breathing right now though. Homes aren't made of or filled with stuff made of only wood and neither are cars.

I was reading that once the SA's stop and the sea breeze kicks in, it's going to push all that smoke back inland. it may take up to 2 weeks for everything to dissipate after the fires stop.

You guys missed my point apparently... which is that fire suppression is not an environmentalist thing. You can't blame us.

Fire suppression is also used to prevent perceived threats to people and property, and to protect grazing land.

The southwest is going to burn down into a desert and the southeast is going to dry up. Comon up people, I got some property for sale.

The desert up here in eastern washington is receiving more rain (snow at 6000') that I've seen in 20 years.

You can now register your cell phone (or unlisted number) with reverse-911. http://www.sandiego.gov/ohs/reverse911/index.shtml

Today is the first anniversary of the Esperanza Fire that killed five firefighters in California.

I was talking to a girl on AIM and she told me about the fires. Then told me she had to go, and thinks the fire spread to her backyard. I hope she is ok.

yeah...I've heard that one before.

I forgot about this thread. And actually, her house did burn down. I think it was a summer/vacation home, but still she had to evacuate it.
