What temperature is normal for a 3200+ AMD 64? My P4 idles at about 40 degrees. This one idles at about 70... don't think that's good. Anyone know for sure?

Make sure you have good contact between the Heatsink and the CPU. That's waaay too hot.

Well, I spread the heatsink compound on... not the first time I've done it, with no problems in the past. However, maybe it didn't settle right. Perhaps the fan isn't strong enough? It's operating at 4500 rpm, so i don't know why there would be a problem. Any suggestions?

What heatsink are you using? The retail one already comes with a thermal pad on it and shouldn't need any additional thermal interface material.

Dual Xeon's with stock cooling FSU's from Supermircro (mobo):
CPU1: 125F / 51C
CPU2: 120F / 49C

too hot

mine idles around 30 degrees.

what id do is, remove the heatsink, clean all the crap off it, clean the surface of the cpu, get some thermal paste, (AS5 or something) and just reapply then ensure good contact with the HSF when you reseat

Your mobo is probably reporting wrong temperature. If your CPU idle @ 70C, I am sure it will become a lot hotter at load, and it would have should itself down by then. Try to feel the heaksink with your hands, my heaksink was barely warm even when my mobo temp utility tells me that my CPU was @ 71C.

If your heatsink is making poor contact with the CPU, it could very well be cool while the CPU is baking away.

It DID shut itself down. My guess is that the thermal paste is too thick, really. I'll go get some more and reapply. The reason I am having to do this is because my old mainboard took a crap on me. Thanks for all the help. I appreciate it.
