CPU temp hit 86C.. after installing Antec PSU (wtf)

Ok, I bought the Zalman 7000aclu about 2 weeks ago, cpu temp lingered around 40C with no case fans and everything ran fine until today. I just received the Antec true 330w PSU to replace my crappy generic one and after installing it I thought everything was fine and stable so I went to watch some tv. I dozed off for about an hour and when I woke up and checked the temps the cpu diode reading was at 86C! Immediately I thought there was something wrong with the app I was using (Everest home edition) so I tried rebooting from the start menu to check the temps in bios. Just as I was about to hit restart all of a sudden the thing just shuts down by itself.. I hit the power button to turn it back on but it shuts off again, within 5 seconds... I left it alone for a little bit.

Now at least my PC is up and running but at higher temps than I had before, it starts off at 50C and keeps rising till it hits 55C and just stays around there. So I need some help in trying to find out what caused the huge spike in the temp I had earlier and why is the idle temp still so much higher now after only installing a psu. Two things: I noticed the vent on the Antec PSU, the side facing inwards towards the optical drive is outputting much more heat than my old one.. it creates sort of a hot spot right above the heatsink.. thought I should mention it but personally I cant see how that would be the cause of the problem since 40C to 86C is not exactly a slight increase in temp. Second I am using Articsilver 3 that had been stored away in a resealable ziploc bag for over a year, is that a no no? Any help would be appreciated.

Specs:

Athlon 1700
Asus A7N8X Deluxe
Maxtor 80GB
Kingston 512MB DDR
PNY GF4 TI4200

maybe the hsf is moved while you were changing the PSU, so it is not making good contact?
Also see if the fan is spinning.

Is your Zalman power connector attached to the motherboard or PSU? If the PSU, did you use a power connector marked "fan" for the HSF? Those should only be used for case fans.

zzzz, thats what I thought too. I cleaned off the arctic silver and reapplied it but still at 55 - 60C.

Dave, the Zalman is connected to the mobo.

Is it just radiating heat, or is it actually pushing hot air into the case? Maybe the PSU has a fan installed backwards, since air should only be flowing into the PSU then out the back of the case through the PSU exhaust fan

Great, the temp just keeps rising.. 68C now  Anyone have any ideas before this damn thing burns up lol

Dave, just radiating heat.

If you installed the Fanmate, it slows down the HSF fan. Try increasing the speed or removing the fanmate altogether.

it could be that the old one had a fixed-speed fan and the new one has a temperature-controlled fan, and that the new one is pulling less air through. put a case fan in if you can, and see if it is still being so hot.

If understand correctly your PSU vents into the inside of your case?!?! Does this PSU have 1 or 2 fans?
Are you sure it's installed correctly? Are the fan(s) working properly?

Everything is installed and working properly. Could it be that the Antec is just a little underpowered since the psu is designed to lower noise?Because I barely feel any airflow at all coming from the back and again theres a hot spot right around the cpu area. I think it was probably my fault when it hit 86C, I mustve accidentally shifted the heatsink since it was a tight fit. Now I am getting an average of 58C.. still more than the 40C I was getting before I swapped out the psu. Does anyone else have a Antec true 330w, what temps are you getting?

I have the Antec 380w ps that came with the antec overture.. it vented its exhaust air INTO the case, causing really high temperatures. I reversed the fan (something that I found out afterwards was pretty dangerous) and temps dropped by ~16 degrees. Check the direction of the air from the psu (but I can't recommend reversing it yourself).

Power supply must not be removing, or generating m0ore heat in that case, get some fans for goodness sake!

Take a piece of paper, and place it near the PSU's rear exhaust fan outlet port. Is the piece of paper being blown outward, or being sucked inward? The fans on the PSU should be configured to draw in the heat from inside the case and to exhaust the waste heat outwards. If the fan is somehow reversed, then that would be a good reason for your problem.

Sounds like a fan got installed backwards in the psu if reseating the hsf didn't work. Make sure it's not blowing air into the case...maybe the exhaust fan is underpowered?

Sounds like you have a quite PSU that is simply moving less air to make things quieter. Or perhaps its baddly tuned and needs to be returned. Did you old PSU have 2 fans as well? did it have a bottom vent or a front vent?
