CPU Speed Setting

Hi, in the BIOS there is a setting when calculating the CPU speed, one reads 100 mhz, the other 133mhz. Is this the memory speed? Mine is PC133 ram but when I run my computer at that speed it runs fine for a while then crashes shortly after. 100mhz it runs flawlessly. If someone can enlighten me as to what the problem could be I'd greatly appreciate it. 3dmark gives me ~80fps top in the first car chase demo at 100mhz speed but when I run it at 133mhz it goes up to ~105fps but then freezes shortly through the demo.

Without more info this is an educated guess.

The 100/133 is probably referring to your front side bus (fsb)

There are two components to processor speed, FSB and clock multiplier.

I'm going to assume your processor is meant to run at 100 FSB and when you change it to 133 you are overclocking the processor, hence the instability.

1- What memory? How many sticks & what kind?

2- Try downloading Prime95 and Motherboard Monitor. Set MBM to use VIA686B-3 -- that should read your cpu temp. Run it at 133 and see if you get any errors. Watch the temperature through the dashboard. If it runs for 30 minutes with no problem, set the high temp alarm for the highest temp you see in Prime95. Run 3dmark.

If Prime95 runs ok and 3dmark still locks up, you probably are running the mem too fast. But lmk about the results to 1 and 2.

1. Its generic memory (dunno the manufacturer) 512mb PC133.

2. I'll try this either today or tomorrow, I got a busy day today but thank you very much for the reply.

You've got 1 512MB stick or 2 256MB? Also, what's the CAS latency? 2 or 3?

One 512mb, I believe CAS 3. I used to have 2 512MB, and I could have *sworn* I ran it at 133mhz fsb and not 100mhz. :|

Set your memory settings to "Normal" for all three memory banks and latency to 3. Set interleaving to "Disabled". LMK regarding the tests I mention above. Also, what type of heatsink do you have on the cpu? What's the max system temp (VIA686B-2 setting for MBM) you see in Prime95? And one more thing: what voltage do you have set for the cpu, and what's the reading in MBM?

PS That T-bird isn't unlocked, is it?
