CPU + Motherboard Burning up, whats the dealio?

Hey guys,
I just recently got my new system parts in the mail, and after having both a faulty MB and memory, I was finally able to post (whew). Unfortunately, my idle and load temps are insanely hot, and I have no clue why. I have installed the zalman 2 times already (with AS5), and moved my cables around a bit; but my idle temps are between 45-50 (They actually went up the second time, WTF?) and I don't even want to post my load temps. My mobo NB and SB's are also cooking up a storm (from what I've heard this board runs hot, but not that hot).
Why is this?
Have I been using too much AS5/not properly installing?
Is my airflow sucky?
I had no problem cooling my x2 4400 which was idling at 35-38c and load around 47-50 with the same case + zalman. I can get some pictures of my setup if you'd like.
I'd really like to get this thing working again,
Thanks so much,
Frosty

Not all C2D CPUS are the same. Mine for example does much the same as yours. I tried everything and gave up. Simply put, some CPUs just run a bit hotter than others.

Grain of Rice is for the x2's although i have heard that C2D's do fine with it, AS says that you should do a vertical line over the C2D heatsink link to PDF.
Those temps are really unacceptable, seeing as I bought the chip to overclock (my temps are without any clocking at all, I want to explore all other possible options to get it running at more optimal temps.

Yep, my E6400 is an inferno also. I ran it for a couple of months on the stock HSF and overclocked to 3.0 I was at mid 50's idle and 70-72c load, if I cranked it up to 3.2 it idled near 60c and would hit 80c at load (obviously didn't run it like that very long)

I recently switched HSF to the Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme and it knocked my temps down 20c, now I get load temps in the low 50's at 3.0 and the low 60's for 3.2. but thats still pretty insane for this HSF.

voltage???

1.45V Actual, is something only attempted by people on water.

V @ 1.25 which is stock I think.

From what i've read elsewhere, anything over 55-60C is bad bad bad, is there anyway (besides buying a new case/heatsink/processor) that I can get my temps down more?

I agree those temps are way high.

Try cleaning your HSP surface and cpu surface with 90% alc and try adding the as5.

Usually I just make a little X sign using AS5 and my idle temp on e6420 on stock speed is 32c and max temp at 42c. I am using gigabyte 3d cooler ultra gt which I guess helps.

Hmm, we've seen a few bad heatpipe coolers at work lately in brand new Dell machines which makes me wonder if you're not having a similar problem. Have you tried installing the stock Intel cooler to compare temps with your Zalman? What utility are you using to monitor (I find TAT works best)?

When I can get some time off from work i'll try installing the stock cooler, i'm getting pretty disassembling now : ). What is the proper way to apply AS5 (with the stock cooler)? Can anyone get me a pic of how they did\do it?
Thanks so much guys

You may have gotten a bad batch.

I had an E6850 that would idle at 60C. Running Dual Prime Core Temps were 100+ then would reboot.

Not much you can do. I lapped the IHS but it didn't really help.

While covering the basics...

How to apply AS5 and other thermal compounds:

http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=361385

How is the airflow through your case, with 2 x 90's and a 120mm you should have plenty assuming they are all running. Have you dressed out and tied down your cables? Verified the direction of airflow front-to-back by verifying your fans are blowing the expected direction (there are arrows on the frame that will indicate airflow direction)?

I just don't see how an e6400 would run hotter than an X2 4400 at stock speeds, something else is going on here. Both my e6600 (g batch) and e4300 (c batch) run so cool my Freezer 7 doesn't even fire up the fan until they've been powered on for a few minutes... When I upgraded my X2 4200 socket 939 rig to the e6600 my base/load temps dropped about 10 degrees overall. Going from an X2 4400 to an e6400 in your case the difference should be even more pronounced.

Assuming your CPU cooler was working and sized properly for the processor it was installed on, 60c is WAY too high for a properly working processor at idle. It should probably have been RMAed, that's simply not normal. I wouldn't set an expectation among other C2D owners that they might see temps like that particularly in a non-overclock situation even with a bad batch.

Hard to RMA ES...

First batch E0 steppings ran crazy hot as Intel was switching from Soldered on IHS to a IHS put on with TIM. TIM is now the norm and they seem to have mastered things better.

Well things have gone from bad to worse.
I took everything out, installed the stock heatsink, put everything back in, and now i'm not getting a greenlight on the mobo. This entire build has been a nightmare, i've never had any problems on my other 5 builds, but this one has been hell. Is there anyway to troubleshoot and see if it's the mobo or the PSU?
I have a OCZ powerstream 520 Thats rated at 33A on the 12V and had no problems with it before.
Arghh!

Edit:
It seems my psu is dead, I plugged a cheap rosewill case PSU i had lying around and got a green mobo light.

So looks like i'm buying a new PSU
