I'm currently running my 3000+ Venice @2.8 with stock HS/Fan (yes I am).
Temps are ok, but with the summer months coming, I want to get something to take the edge off and buy me a little breathing room for warmer room temps.

I don't want or need anything crazy-ass like some of these super high-end coolers now. I was looking at the AC 64 and while impressive that thing is a monster... I just don't want anything that big.

Quiet is key too....

Ummm no... not really. Maybe not in my case I guess. It just seems like such a "waste" or something.

I'd be afraid for my poor MB more than anything. I can hear the traces crackin now 🙂
 
Honestly the AC 64 is awesome if you're just looking for some breathing room. It's pretty light too; AMD says the max weight should be 450g, but the AC only goes over that by about 70 or 80, not nearly as much as those people with all copper heatsinks or ninjas. I move mine all the time, and it's got a giant SI-120 on it. You could also look at the XP-90, that one's very light. What kind of case do you have?
 
The case is an old steel, full tower servetr case from literally like 10yrs ago. Its done nothing but serve me flawlessly.

 
however, it's 7 dollar shipping.

(e.g. I planned on ordering a 10" SATA cable for 1.50 and the shipping ended up being 7.09...not exactly the best deal).
 
The AC Freezer Pro is an amazing deal for the price. The XP-90 mounts on the stock mounts. No fan included though.
 
AC FP64 Pro is about equal to an XP90 with a standard fan. The XP90 has the advantage in that it can accept a higher CFM fan such as a Delta (the AC is more limited here), but that means a louder HSF. The AC FP64 is also very light compared to other aftermarket HSFs, so despite its size it's a good fit for many mobos.
 
While the 64 Pro is a little on the big side, it's effective and has a price that's easier on the wallet than some of the other popular ones. When I first took mine out of the box it was suprisingly light. It looks like it would weigh 5 lbs. I real happy with mine, you should reconsider it OP.

if you are worried about size and such, my suggestion would be to buy one of the many retail AMD heatpipe coolers for sale here on the forums. These are the coolers that come with the FX and dual core CPUs. They have a copper base, aluminum fins, 4 heatpipes and a 80mm fan. They are said to perform quite the same as a XP-90 and you can get one for about $20 shipped.
 
Can the Freezer 64 be somehow turned on its side? It looks like the fan will face down on boards with a rotated socket, like the DFI ones.
