Well I just finished watching all the episodes and the movie and I must say that this is truly one of the best things I've ever seen to come from television. I'm not an anime fan really at all but this show was just amazing.

A few questions:

When was it first made?

Why did they quit making the show. It seems like it stayed good and the storyline was made to where it could go on for much longer?

I know that the movie premered in LA recently or is going to soon but when can we expect a more widespread release?

Are any other Cowboy Bebop's being made? Movies that come in between the episodes?

What show would be a good one to pickup for someone who really likes CBop? Is there anything else like it out there or that can even compare to how awesome it is?

Normally most anime will run for just one or two seasons.

One season will normally consist of 26 episodes, and then depending on the popularity of the anime, will either run a second season, or just do an OVA/Movie.

It's VERY rare that an anime will run for more than 52 episodes, many have seasons which are just 13 episodes long.

For new stuff:

RahXephon (If I see any crap about it being an EVA ripoff >_< ......)

Witch hunter robin

Azumanga Daioh

(yes FMP is not on the list, #1 it had low grade animation, #2 it forgot the plot around ep.4 #3 the ending was super weak)

Evangelion is VERY good. I highly recommend it. Evangelion and Cowboy Bebop are far above any other anime I've ever seen. Evangelion is REALLY hard to understand towards the end, but is an excellent series.

1) I don't know.
2) I don't know.
3) I don't know.
4) Rurouni Kenshin (the series and OAV's, the movie sucks) > Fushigi Yugi (series and OAV's good, no movie) > Cowboy Bebop (good series and movie) > Trigun (good series, no OAV or movie) > Escaflowne (good series, okay movie). There you go, just make sure to watch Rurouni Kenshin, I don't know one person that hasn't liked it.

www.animeondvd.com has a ton of reviews

Netflix has a very good selection of anime, though not perfect.
www.rightstuf.com has some closeout ultra-cheap VHS (besides the usual new DVD & VHS).
www.dvdplanet.com has about the cheapest prices for non-preorder.

Bebop was great -- some other good ones:
Trigun (sci-fi wild west)
Serial Experiments: Lain (cyberpunk + Xfiles)
Bubblegum Crisis 2040 (babes in powered armor kick cyborg butt)

movies -- fun
Ghost in the Shell, Akira

movies -- good but highbrow
Wind Named Amnesia, Royal Space Force: The Wings Of Honneamise

AnimeOnDVD has a recommended / essential collection list(s) that might help.

Galaxy Express 999, 114 episodes :p Also 4 movies, 1 spin-off movie, 1 spin-off series with ?? episodes, 2 tv specials, one 4,000 pg manga series, another one currently going, it's up to about 1,100+ pages so far probably.

(just giving the only big exception I know to Andy Hui's excellent response :p)

Kimagure Orange Road is one of my favorite series of all time. The Seikai No Monshu/Seikai also pretty entertaining. Slam Dunk is probably one of the most hilarious one out there, especially the earlier episodes :)
Some of the newer one, Samurai Deeper Kyo, Dragon Drive for the action type and Ai Yori Aoshi, Chobits for the romantic drama genre.

291 episodes and 13 movies, but the 291 episodes compress plot-wise rather poorly :(

The Slayers saga span 3 seasons for a total of 72 episodes, 4 movies and several OVA. I'm surprised I still didn't lost interest after watching every single one of them.

Sailor Moon had 200 episodes and 3 movies.

The first season, S, and Super S were probably the best seasons.

The Cowboy Bebop movie "Knocking on Heaven's Door" happens during the series before the finale. I'm too lazy to check EX but I believe Cowboy Bebop was produced during the late-90s, 98 I think? Dunno when it'll be in widespread release... but I've got it already... it's quite good, but don't sweat not seeing it.

EDIT: Oh, I forgot to mention... the multi-part finale never aired on regular TV in Japan! It was only on a pay cable station, so it was ended probably because the studio/director decided that one year was enough for the project. Heck, it may have been difficulty in trying to get the actors/actresses back again. Who knows... I don't think the director ever intended Bebop to be a serial, but rather to have an end.

I second the suggestion for Azumanga Daioh... also, check out Atashinichi or Crayon Shinchan if you like wacked out humor anime.
I didn't like RahXephon since it didn't hold my interest. Too much, Ooooo it's a mysterious things in the sky!!!
Full Metal Panic! was good with the exception for the ending IMHO, the plot seemed to move weird as it seemed like the studio was under the gun of the station schedulers & execs on whether the show would stay or end. Bad animation? Um... Gonzo is one of the premiere digital animation studios in Japan. They have some of the BEST digital process quality in anime... Anywho, FMP is different enough from Cowboy Bebop that I can't exactly recommend it just based on liking CB.

Someone mentioned Samurai Deeper Kyo... I'm watching that now as well... Trigun is a good series as well. It's got more of a spaghetti western feel than the jazzy, eclectic, avante garde feel of Bebop. There honestly isn't anything like Bebop out there since it's more of genre buster than most of the stereotypical anime prevalent these days. Of course, that doesn't mean they can't be enjoyable. But then if you liked the film noir aspect of Bebop, you'll probably like Noir. If you like the space adventure feel, Outlaw Star...

For good overall anime, nobody mentioned InuYasha! I believe InuYasha's currently airing on Cartoon Network on Sat. nights. I don't care since I hate dubs and I'm already on ep 82.
