Some people believe that conservatives lack empathy for others as a result of their tendency to not believe something until it affects them personally, which is a statement that would likely get a lot of flack if it were asserted on conservative forums. Now, I don't necessarily believe that they lack empathy, but who they show empathy to is highly subjective. Veritasium did a video on "Is Success Luck or Hard Work?" and I believe that conservatives believe that success is primarily due to hard work while liberals believe that luck plays a more significant role. Therefore, if a person subscribes to the "hard work leads to success" world view, any faults or issues in someone else's life is a result of them making poor decisions or them not working hard enough. Conversely, when someone has success in their life, they believe that it must have been entirely due to their own decisions, regardless of what natural advantages were afforded to them purely due to factors outside of their control. This concept is what conservatives call "personal responsibility", that humans are in control of and decide their own outcomes.

Going back to the topic of empathy, when conservatives don't believe something is happening until it happens to them, it's because they believe that when it affects someone else, it's because of that other person's own fault, which is the "It's your problem, not mine" or "Fuck you, got mine" mentality. Conservatives don't believe that racism or other inequalities are an issue because they aren't negatively affected by it. However, any benefits granted to them by being white or privileged they associate with their own inherent "talent" or "hard work", even though it wasn't something they had control over to begin with. I believe that when conservatives are empathetic, it's usually to those who get a natural advantage taken away from them, i.e. when privilege is taken away from someone who enjoys that privilege, it feels like unfairness to the person because they "worked hard" and "didn't deserve it". You can apply this to taxes, healthcare, welfare, social rights, etc.

Conservatives feel like they shouldn't be taxed more because they worked hard to earn their money, even if it was made through accumulated generational wealth. Conservatives feel like they shouldn't have to pay for other's welfare because they don't see themselves as needing to rely on it, yet others are using it, even though the people who depend on it may not have the same privileges afforded to them, which would help them get off welfare. Conservatives feel like LGBTQ people shouldn't be granted the same protections because they believe that being LGBTQ is a choice and not something that was outside of that person's control. Anyways, the list goes on and on.

Well, I agree, except I think that "who they show empathy to is highly subjective" (probably should be "highly selective", no?) applies to everyone, not just conservatives, and it's part of the limitation of empathy. It's why empathy is a bit over-rated as a trait, and why it's not sufficient to base any sort of social system on.

I think everybody finds it hard to empathise with those who have had very different experiences to themselves, or who exist in very different circumstances.

Also, everybody wants to believe their good fortune is due to their intrinsic virtues. You see that all the time, in all sorts of different contexts, it's the underlying basis of victim-blaming.

Tennessee Vaccine chief fired for pointing out the Tennessee Law (legal to vaccinate teens without parental consent):

The Tennessee state government on Monday fired its top vaccination official, Dr. Michelle Fiscus, who says that state leaders have "bought into the anti-vaccine misinformation campaign."

Fiscus warns that, as the delta variant continues to spread in the undervaccinated state, more Tennesseans "will continue to become sick and die from this vaccine-preventable disease because they choose to listen to the nonsense spread by ignorant people."

Tennessee Vaccine chief fired for pointing out the Tennessee Law (legal to vaccinate teens without parental consent):
This is bothersome.

"Fiscus wrote that, as the now-former medical director for vaccine-preventable diseases and immunization programs at the Tennessee Department of Health, she is the 25th immunization director to leave their position amid the pandemic. With only 64 territorial immunization directors in the country, her firing brings the nationwide turnover in immunization directors to nearly 40 percent during the health crisis."

We have to care because unfortunately the impact of their stupidity doesn’t end with them.

Yes, could have another variant arise, but on the global scale of it, they are not the biggest contributor to the risk. Just look where the biggest outbreaks are coming from, and none of the most serious variants have come from the USA.

Ridding the world of their stupidity would outweigh the risk.

I just do not get it.

3 professional golfers have had to drop out of the upcoming British Open due to positive tests. And I did not see where any of them claimed to have already been vaccinated. They are professional athletes and their income depends on their playing their sport. Why, this late in the game, they aren't vaccinated makes no sense. I know Zach Johnson has not 1, but 2 children who are currently not old enough to get vaccinated. Why would you even take the chance? It makes me sad.
Yeah not like golfers are doing daily training and conditioning. Like that football player, saying he'd rather retire than get vaccinated. He is just antivax. But I kind of understand that swimmer. He says can't afford to have 1-3 days downtime from training. But minor inconvenience vs being barred from competition, easy choice the make.

Meh. It's that mote/beam thing. Vaccines are not yet available to a vast swath of the world population due to circumstances beyond their control. That's not true at all in the US or most of the developed world. If right wing politicians in this country hadn't politicized vaccination Covid would already be reduced to a public health nuisance rather than an ongoing serious threat.

No, it is fucking terrifying, and a clear indicator that this country is fucking toast. I hate to think what the future is for my grandsons just starting out in the world.

The Dark Ages were good enough for Europe and by damn, they’re good enough for Tennessee.

This is just not Covid, but ALL vaccine outreach is under pressure from the Republicans. Republicans are now firmly anti-science. Even if this means people may/will die. There's no other way to look at it.

And ... If the Democrats are in favor of something, they MUST be against it. Democrats favor vaccinations. Therefore it follows that they, as good Republicans, must oppose vaccinations.

This is why I think Democrats should come out strongly against smashing your own nuts with a hammer.

So…leadership at a local company decided to hold a meeting at a VP’s residence not too long ago. He specifically asked that everyone who comes should be vaccinated, or else wear masks and distance. Fast forward to today and 6 people have tested positive, at least 3 are symptomatic (one bad but won’t require hospitalization) and all those newly infected were fully vaccinated.

Turns out, someone not vaxxed showed up and pretended to be vaxxed—no mask!

Question—can the unvaxxed vector be fired?

Depends upon the State however I suspect if your employer tells you to wear a mask if not vaccinated and you do not you could be fired in most states.

My sister moved to Florida 3 weeks ago. She's basically a single mother of two young kids. 38 years old and has a number of health issues. She isn't vaccinated for "reasons". I hope I'm not responding to this thread at some point in regards to her. Covid fucked me sideways and I was one of the first in line in the state for a vaccination here. No amount of data/discussion/personal stories on how bad Covid is/ect will change her mind.

Deaths are rising again. This time it's a "Pandemic of the Unvaccinated":

At this point it's tough to care that there are breakouts in areas full of purposely ignorant folks that tend to lean very racist and anti-democratic at the same time. The only reason I care is that some healthcare workers that are actually evolved humans have to deal with them, and possibly someone evolved that can't get the vaccine may get sick too. I care about that. I don't care about the idiots anymore.

As a Canadian, I find it abhorring that some 45% of Americans refuse Covid Shots considering our country had to wait to get the vaccine and there are billions waiting and dying around the world ;o(

All they are doing is creating super spread events and mutant variants that our present vaccines may not protect us from.

The vaccine does not necessarily prevent you from getting the virus but it gives you better then a 90% of living if you do and greatly reduces event spreading and further mutations.

Just how stupid are these Covidediots ?
