Yeah it's pretty lame. If you're a guy that's gotta pay that cover charge to meet girls that sucks but I guess it improves your chances. I've got a girlfriend so it pisses me off when our friends want to go to one of these clubs and I've got to pay the stupid cover charge when I could care less how many girls are there. I see it more as discrimination against those who aren't single. It doesn't matter though because I won't go there with my girl to have a drink because of the stupid cover charge policy. Maybe that doesn't hurt their business that much to matter, but I still don't have to give them any of my money.
The other thing that ticks me off is lame ass dress code policies. I'm a baseball hat guy. I usually wear one when I go out, 1. because I like them and 2. because I don't have to fool around with combing my hair. This one place I've been to a couple times bills themselves as an Irish Pub. That's all well and good except that after 10pm they try and say it's a "night club". They'll have a live performer, usually an alternative band that does covers. The stupid part is that at 10pm the dress code changes to no hats. Why that even friggin matters I don't know. Doesn't matter if I walk in at 8:30 and hang out and have drinks, at 10pm the bouncers come up and tell me I have to take my hat off. Every Irish pub I've ever been to the dress code is pretty damn relaxed, this one is trying to be something it's not. So I don't go there anymore. If I got get dressed up to go out and relax, that's not relaxing for me.

Word I hear you on the dress code. I live in St. Petersburg. We're pretty relaxed here, we only have 2 clubs with dress codes. So when I go to them its hard to remember about the codes. Outside of St Pete I've actually been told by a bouncer that I couldnt come in with sandals on because I might cut my feet on something while 3 girls in open toed high heels walk on in.

Personally, I don't care because I don't really go to clubs, but I can't support discounts for ladies AND support things like equality in the workplace and such. When I DO end up at a club I'm there to hang out with my group of friends (about half female) and it's really shitty that us guys have to pay to get in just to do that... I'm not there to meet girls, nor will I waste my time talking to the girls other than the ones I came with, yet to no one's surprise, I still have to pay $5 and spend half the time watching out for the pervs that are trying to get their hands on the girls that I'm there with. They already charge $5-6 for a pint of beer so it's not like they aren't making money aside from the cover charge... I think I'm going to start a new trend of not tipping bartenders when I have to pay a cover charge. Make up for it in other ways, ya know?

Yes, under title VII which applies to EMPLOYMENT discrimination. Last time I checked, title VII didn't apply to clubs. Also, title VII deals with employer - employee discrimination AFAIK, not employer - consumer discrimination.

I think punk rockers are just as trashy as mini skirt ass shakers soooooo to each their own. At least ass shakers can be presentable if you dress them up but that skank with six hair colors and hoop through her lip still looks trashy in the most formal gown.
This is one of those "it's the principle of the thing" situations. I don't meet women at clubs generally, as I'm getting too old, so I could care less that they have to pay to get in. You chicks wanted equality, you've got it. Clubs shouldn't be able to get away with blatant discrimination just because most people's reaction is "who cares". That was the same attitude people had about colored-only restaurants and bathrooms and baseball leagues for awhile too, and that eventually got exposed as wrong too.
I guess you'd have to actually be part of the community for a while to see it, but those women who have piercings or whatever aren't skanky, not for the most part anyway. Unless you're talking about fake pop-rock hot-topic types, then yes, you'd be right about that. However, those chicks tend to be from the younger generation, not the people I grew up with.
As for the "ass shakers" looking presentable... I guess that's just personal choice, one that I can be happy to agree with you partially on. Looking MORE presentable? Eh, I don't think so. But that's just my taste.

Cost to get in does not exclude you from tipping...stick to your Pabst at the local dive it you can't afford the more exclusive places.
Covers serve one purpose, to limit patrons which keeps the crowds lower.

I honestly don't know why this is a legal issue. It's simple economics...guys want pussy, guys want to go to places where they can meet pussy and they'll pay for it. Girls want to go to a happening place and have a good time and not be hassled by a bunch of losers. It's a win win situation. Why is government fucking with this?

It excuses me from tipping if I damn well please. It's my money and I'll give it to whoever I want, and I will no longer give it to some bartender to perform the menial task of pouring a beer when I already paid to get in to the joint. Burn me at the stake if you want but it's going to be my new policy and I don't care. Tip is profit on top of the profit of the cover on top of the profit of overpriced drinks. Sucks for them I guess.
FYI: a $5 cover to a place that anyone willing to line up at to get in does NOT discourage less guys to come and is hardly "exclusive".
