Heh someone's getting fired for that mistype.

that's a little more than a mistype 😉

6,000.00 to 6,000,000.00

that's someone falling asleep on the zero key

Not if it was in scientific notation.

6e3 vs 6e6, they are right next to each other on the number pad.

Yeah, cause banks use scientific notation.

Deposit:

2e3 + 1e2 + 5e1 + 9e0 + 3e-1 + 4e-2

Maybe they should. Heck, maybe fast food restaurants should use it for pricing.

McDonalds:
Me: I'd like a number 3.
Cashier: That'll be 3e0 + 2e-1 + 2e-2.
Me: Can you make change for a $5e1?
Cashier: Uhm....

SN would be pretty foolish 😉

I read a programming blog called TheDailyWTF, which features real-life examples of bad code, bad development practices, bad business practices, etc. They post an article highlighting some screw-up, and invariably there's at least a half dozen people saying "the real WTF is..." and pointing out something they think should have been done differently.

All that to say - the real WTF is a bank using scientific notation. 😉 I don't think that's really what happened, but it's a funny theory.

Another theory - I've used adding machines in the past that have a "00" button. They're obviously intended for dealing with money. Perhaps whatever equipment this bank was using also had a 00 button, and they hit that three times instead of hitting 0 three times.

Or how about you verify what you are doing?

I don't think I would keep the money, but would sure borrow it for a while.

Would be tempting, but how does one "run" with that without it being Cash?(didn't read article)

maybe they wired the money to an offshore account?

Police said the bank had recovered part of the money, indicating the couple may not have been able to access the entire amount.

...wait... bah!

Honestly it's really hard to say without being in that position, but I don't think I could bring myself to take that money. One time I stole a road cone from a construction site while drunk. The next day there was an article on the news about how much money construction companies lose from shenanigans like that, and so I returned the cone out of guilt. I'm too honest for my own good.

Edit - OMG hahaha they call Rotorua a "resort" in that article  I was born in Rotorua and spent much of my youth there. The place is a run-down shit-hole! Wow, resort? Man I'm LOL'ing IRL about that.

Edit 2 - also, I'm a Westpac customer. Hopefully they'll "screw up" with my account at some point 🙂

Typical dishonest kiwis? Arent you the one who is always bitching that others are racist/bigots/stereotypers? A little hypocritical aren't we?

He's from New Zealand, and he was clearly joking. 😕

A couple applied for a $6,000 loan and the bank accidentally deposited $6,000,000.

The next day, they just suddenly shut down their service station and the day after, they disappeared.

Would you have run with the money too?

HELL YEAH! $6M retire 4 life!

good for them! hope they never get caught. or if they do, spend as much $ as possible

Where are the bank's internal cross-check controls for large amounts.

Usually, you have SR. Execs that need to sign off on large amounts.

I doubt they withdrew the total amount though, so all the bank has to do is correct the mistake in their system....everything back to normal.

no way I would do that, being on the run is not really worth any amount of money. You could probably carve out a living for yourself in some foreign country, but you'd be stuck there because border crossings would be too risky and stressful. And they would have had to withdrawl a good chunk of that to actually last them the rest of their lives.

Maybe they did. It doesn't say how much was recovered. Brazil, Switzerland (maybe too expensive), Bahamas etc. would be good options for places without extradition treaties.
