IIRC, i saw a Chrysler Ad recently (this past week) saying that the memorial day sale is still going on. was i being crazy? Chrysler still has dealers open? i haven't seen a single one open since for the past month.

+ chrysler's website is still up

Yes, there are dealers still open, most in fact remain open, Chrysler is under chapter 11 bank. rules, they are re-organizing their debt and will continue to remain open, they closed the dealers who were not moving much product anyway. Maybe it's best to educate yourself about the ongoing situation, use the internet, info all over about what's been happening..

I believe they must liquidate their inventory, not sell them like they normally would. That being the case, competing dealers would bid on allocations and re-sell the cars themselves.

No, they are entering Chapter 11 and not required to liquidate. Dealers will remain open and selling remaining car inventory. Whether GM shuts down all of production like Chrysler did remains to be seen. GM is already scheduled to close down their production plants for up to 13 weeks this summer so it wouldn't matter much if they closed the rest of them down or not (except the "hot" cars like the Camaro or the Malibu which are basically selling everything produced right now).

Bankrupt

This is good imo. GM can rid of Hummer and all the other useless brands it has. Hopefully somewhere in a room full of suits, they will realize what a fanbase the new GM vehicles and V-8s (of course) have. I hope they keep the people who styled the c6, the g8, the volt, the camaro, and all the other pretty good looking new cars. Apparently the Converj is a go too.

There was something on the news where they mentioned yesterday that they had a buyer for Hummer. They've got quite a few people wanting to buy Saturn. I haven't heard anything about Pontiac.

How old are you? Chapter 11 bankruptcy is not the shutting down of a business...but rather the restructuring of the business. Plenty of Chrysler dealerships will stay open.

I think GM wants to hold on to the Pontiac name.

I'm sure they'd like to do a lot of things, but they have to prove to a judge that they have made every effort to be profitable. If you can prove to him that you have projections showing more $$$ with Pontiac than without then you're good to go. If not, then it won't be GM anymore.

Sadly, I went out into my driveway where my pontiac and saturn were, and all that remains are two piles of dust. ////SHAKES FIST//// DAMN YOU GM, how could you let june 1st pass like this.

so, do the anandtech forums still suggest buying GM stock?

Well, the government owns 72% and the UAW owns quite a bit, so good luck trying to be a capitalist in a socialist endeavor.

The Saturn one is kind of confusing. Well, it could be slightly confusing, I guess, would be a better description. Penske would buy the Saturn brand, import cars from Samsung, which is owned by Renault, that also owns Nissan (55% or around there), which Samsung cars are based off of.

I don't think you'll be able to buy stock now that its in bankruptcy.
And why would you imagine that a government run business would ever be profitable?
No one should buy a stake in GM until the government totally detaches.

FWIW, it's 60% US, 12% Canada, 10% bond-holders, and remainder is UAW, IIRC.

also, i fail to see how the government will make money that will be returned to citizens. i'm not saying GM won't become profitable again - i'm saying that if/when the US government sells its 60% stake, i'll bet my entire 5 cents stake that we won't see a damn bit of it.

The gov has already started making noises that when the financials de-TARP themselves that they have better uses for the money than returning it to the taxpayers, so yes, I would agree with your statement.

anybody heard the great news about stocks going way up? its been the highest over a 6 month stretch today. Does this relate to GM going down and the removal of its stock from the Dow?
