Hello, Im hypn0tyze...new member :). I frequent the dslr forums if it matters :p.

Anyway here is my problem. Lately, games have been locking up on my system in mid play or intros. I tried EVERYTHING in bios, and every update but nothing worked. Btw system is a 2.4B ghz northwood 768 pc2700 ddr on a epox 4g4a.

SO i decided to reinstall windows. Now here is the problem: On first boot, BIOS and windows did not recognize my I drive, that I used for storage (120gB). So i check the cables and notice one pin is half the size of the others and bent.

To sum it up, I fixed it, got the drive recognized..well sorta. :(. When i boot, i get a bios error "no 80 conductor cable installed." Anyway, i continue into windows and go to disk manager...I see a D drive, that has ~30 GB partition, and 85GB of UNALLOCATED space.

Now note this drive is crucial, as it contained all my important documents, etc. Before i reinstalled windows i had 30gb free on the drive...could that be the 30 its showing?

Anyway, when i try to access this D drive it asks me to format :/. Something like this also happened last time i moved this hd, and i clicked "import drive" or something like that and it worked (cant remember now). How can I get my data (unallocated black bar) back? Atleast i got it back up, but my data is CRUCIAL to me. Thanks for the help, in advance :p. For an image of what I am talking about: click

first of all... welcome to anandtech
secondly, don't post three times in succession.
thirdly... be concise and clear with your problem... it looks like a wall of text.

lastly, some advice on your problem...
are you using windows XP? perhaps the partition that you're trying to access is NTFS formatted and you're using an older version of windows to access it.

Sorry about the triple-posting, I definitely did not mean to. I am using windows XP professional, with my C drive on NTFS and the drive in question was on NTFS as well.

no 80 conductor cable installed

This means that you only have an ATA33 cable attached to the hard drive, it means it will be running at ATA33 rather than ATA100/133 which will be it's maximum, get an ATA100 cable.

Perhaps you have jumper on the hard drive or bios setup to cap it off at some kind of 32GB clip, check the jumper settings first and then the bios....otherwise windows is essentially saying that all that extra space is unformatted and there is nothing there :Q

Thanks, I will definitely look at the jumpers. There are 4 diagrams on the back of the hd, that tell me slave/master configs. One is labeled 16 heads, then 15 heads, then 32gb clip, and finally Auto-spin disable. I referred to the "16 heads," as it was the same jumper config i had prior to reinstalling windows. I will also change the cable. Thanks again.

This is WEIRD..I changed the cable with my cdrw/cdrom cable...but things didnt turn out the way I planned...When I plug in both on the cable, Only the C drive is detected.

When I plug in only the C drive to the master plug...its detected

When I plug the I drive to the slave...its detected

When I plug the I drive to the Master...its detected

Yet when I plug both in the same plug...only the C is detected...can anyone explain this? Better yet, how do I get them both up again :).

When you say "master" and "slave" I take it you are referring to IDE1 and IDE2 connectors on the motherboard. The master and slave descriptions apply to the drives themselves, if attaching them to the same cable you need to ensure that one is set to master and the other is set to slave....

It could be that you have 2 primary partitions....although I'm sure this has not posed a problem in the past.

BY master and slave, Im referring to which connector on the ide cable the hd is plugged into. This cable is plugged into the IDE1 connector on the mobo...

Here ill make an ascii drawing: master-device |------|slave device-----|[] mobo. The |---|------| is a typical ide cable. Hope this makes it easier to understand, if not I'll be glad to further explain.

Should make no difference which connector the drives are connected to providing the right one is connected to the motherboard....I don't think they are two way.....

I wouldn't try to re-create the partition. More than likely, you'll be prompted to format it before you can use it.
Do you have Norton SystemWorks? That might be able to recover the data from the drive?

Ok i ran a checkdisk:
C:\Documents and Settings\Adam>chkdsk /r E:
The type of the file system is RAW.
CHKDSK is not available for RAW drives.

Here is what i get in partition magic: screenshot

Do you have any hd utilities for your drive? I'd d/l them from the manufacturer and do an Extensive test if possible.

its the ibm 120gxp...on ibm.com i could not find anything about it with their confusing interface, and a driver search for gxp or even 120 returns nothing.

Ouch, you should have mentioned it was a IBM Deathstar from the beginning.
Go here Drive Fitness Test and download the DFT. Remember that Hitachi bought out IBM's hard drive business b/c IBM ran it into the ground. Good luck, you'll need it if the drive followed my other 4 IBM drives which needed RMA.
