Everyone can live without the internet, because everyone was living before the internet existed. People get carried away with their internet usage, cell phones, etc - it's not the internet's fault though. It's definitely nice to have it though. To be honest, there were times in my life when I rarely used the internet at all, and that didn't bother me. Too much internet isn't good either, there is more to life than the 'net!

People who have jobs that need the internet, could get a different job. Etc.

This. When it comes to surviving, humans are adaptable and can train in a different career path, if of course we would still be using money for the economy.

I could do just fine without the internet. Hell, without computers period, I could do just fine. I might actually say I'd do better without them.
They are purely a source of addictive entertainment. I love them, but realize I could survive without them.

However, I don't want to. Not for me, but because that means we are no longer making progress in astronomy and other sciences. Without those advances... wth is the point of living? Humans offer nothing for the world besides easy disease transmission. :p

Aye, but it's great for us not at home to be able to keep in touch with the rest of the world. Well it's great at home too but you know what i mean.

How old are you? Seriously, I'm 27 and still remember life before mass Internet access very clearly. Things were fine then too, information just took a little extra research.

Could I live without it now? Sure. I'm a consultant who is currently on an IT project, but I'd probably be doing something else if not. I'm in law school, and that profession was just fine without the Internet. Instead of paying Lexis and Westlaw, they paid librarians.

Sure. It would take a few weeks before I stopped thinking "gee, I should google that."

Maybe we should rephrase this. Obviously, the Internet isn't going away unless something brings it down. Is it conceivable that the Internet can cease to exist, at least for an extended period of time. Obviously a strike by a mile wide meteor would do it, but how about something else?

I don't think I would know nearly as much as I do now without it. The amount and availability of information is staggering.

On the other hand, I would be way more productive without those dang Tower Defense games!

Of course. I was fortunate enough to grow up before the internet was used by anyone other than university researchers. I also know exactly what life was like before cell phones. And you know what? I almost think things were a little richer and more interesting back then. Maybe it's nostalgia, but I think you youngins really missed out on a key piece of perspective.

10 years ago when over half of the population didn't even use a computer, yes.

I can only do it if no one else is. Otherwise I'm completely out of the loop in technology. I'm not Amish.

I totally agree From cell phones, internet, the myspace generation, and like you I remember the richness of people all the way from critical thinking, to politeness, to real customer service you could actually reach. I could give a hoot if the internet completely shut down, and this coming from a very technical person.
