I live in New Orleans and I just recieved news that the people who live at my apartment complex that couldn't get out are being choppered out from the rooftop of our place. Many probably have not been able to eat or drink anything for days. These are my neighbors and alot of them probably died.

There are still lots of people in the city at the Morial Convention Center that are dehydrating and starving to death. They will be pulling drowned dead bodies out of my freaking city for months to come.

I can rattle off to you how everyone made mistakes on this one. I know this because I know my city and I live there. No one person screwed up here, a ton of people made mistakes to make this catastrophe 10x worse.

Examples:

Mayor Nagin should have moved the city transit buses to higher ground before the storm and we would have never had any of these problems. He left them stationed at one of the lowest spots in the city and thats why they are waiting for buses to take people out because all of New Orleans' own buses are underwater.

Governor Blanco still hasn't called for Congress to do a special session in Louisiana. A whole lot of the state's house officials haven't even returned to Baton Rouge yet from vacations. She to my knowledge still hasn't even called the National Guard of Louisiana into action to go to the city.

Alot of people back home own boats and a whole lot of them (hundreds and thousands) white, black, and french/cajun were trying to volunteer on Tuesday to take their boats into the city to help people but armed gang members and crack heads were already shooting and killing cops. They would not let the civillian volunteers go into the city to pull people out because rescue workers were being killed by armed idiots. They had to pull coast guard choppers out because they were being shot at by AK-47's and high powered rifles stolen from stores which believe it or not can take down of those choppers if it hits it in the engine area.

No one was ready for this. That goes from Bush all the way down to the local officials in New Orleans. The Chief of Police of New Orleans Eddie Compass hadn't even returned to the city as of 2 days ago when I left.

At least let them fish out the dead bodies before you start trying to blame a Democrat or a Republican for something that everyone dropped the ball on.

Is this forum really so pathetic that the admins are allowing stupid posts trying to blame Bush, black people, or whoever else for this catastrophe while people are still dying?

Please grow up and show some compassion and condolences to those of us who just lost everything they own and put your personal agendas aside for just a couple of days.

This deserves a sticky.

Thanks for letting us know what's really going on and that you're okay. My thoughts are with you and your family in getting through this horrible ordeal.

Enough with the damned blaming of Nagin over the buses!!

Christ on a stick!!

100,000 people or more needed to be evacuated as they do not have the means to get out of the city on their own.

The post-flood Superdome evacuation started about midnight Wed. night (60 hours ago) and only 15,000-20,000 have been evac?d from there (5,000 remain)

Now, extrapolate that out to 100,000 people and they would have had to have started the evacuation sometime back around the middle of August (there was no Katrina back then.)

Also, I?ve read posts on other boards (like nola and wwltv) of people in that area discussing this topic and, in some districts, the keys are locked in a safe and that most of the city employees were already ordered out.

The NOLA emergency plan doesn?t include public transportation out of the city, only public transportation to temporary shelters which is exactly what they offered.

And remember, Mayor Nagin was requesting outside assistance to provide security for the process and received little or none. The city, itself, cannot provide security to escort and control 100,000, esp. when they just evacuated 80% of the city.

Also, everyone is basing this blaming of Nagin on that image on Yahoo of flooded buses. We don't know where those buses were. They might have been in another parish. They might have been flooded before the storm.

THE KEY THING BEING IGNORED BY MOST EVERYONE is that FOOD and WATER took FIVE DAYS to reach tens of thousands of people. The American Red Cross has NOT BEEN ALLOWED into the city.

You don't think that has something to do with it??

These people needed basic survival items: food and water.

They didn't get it.

Many are dead for it.

And I think this country is going to be a lot of soul searching in the next weeks and months.

Oh look, personal insults.

:cookie:

There are plenty of active posters up here who show VERY little compassion for those DYING in New Orleans.

Too bad you don't have any compassion left for those who lost everything BUT their lives.

Dedalus - I'm glad you're okay. I'm sorry the bickering is making a bad situation worse.

He asks people to stop the bickering and the blaming and does it himself in his own post? Blaming Nagin for something beyond his control and spreading untruths about Gov. Blanco?

I'm glad he's ok and I am sorry his neighbors may be dead and the rest are just now being evacuated. But, what many up here don't understand is that that's what I've been harping on...the delays that have cost lives.

There's no excuse for it.

God forbid you actually listen to somebody that lives there

Would you have replied if he'd said "It's all Bush's fault? I doubt it.

Wait - I know: every single thing bad in this world is Bush's fault, isn't it?

I have listened to people who live there...or...did live there. I've watched the local TV feeds all week. I've read the local forums where people's personal tales are posted. I've seen local news broadcasts here of fire departments that have gone down to N.O. to volunteer their services and the things they've seen and had to do.

This tragedy has affected a huge amount of people in horrible ways. There are countless separate families at this point and an unknown number of dead.

It's a tragedy on an immense scale. The least that could be done is getting food/water to those who've been without for 5 DAYS. Is that too much to ask? It seems to be the case.

I think this should definitely be put in OT instead of here... Oh... wait that will never happen.

The interesting thing is how much people are attacking P and N when blatant racism is going on in OT. There have been way more threads attacking liberals and black people then there have been attacking Bush.

I guess these boards are sort of a microcosm of upper class America. No one cares and is very quick to judge.

A very good article on Americas response to Katrina:

New Orleans crisis shames Americans

You've confirmed what I've said in other posts. Local officials could have been prepared to actually execute their disaster plan.

But at least help is there and flowing in. Thoughts and prayers to you.

Best of luck.

I believe everyone hear or nearly so have deep concerns over the people struck by this disaster. Your ignorant response adds nothing to the debate.

Don't set yourself up as the only one who cares about the people. What arrogance.

The people blaming the victims obviously do not care. The only thing that heartens me here is that the world media and the American media are displaying the cold unfeeling portion of America.

I'm sorry. Where did I say *I* was the only one that cared?

Hmm? You all can keep piling on me. It's been the common m.o. from the "compassionate conservatives" up here but it just shows others' true colors.

One thing is for sure: one of their true colors certainly isn't black.
