What are the odds that any given Blu-Ray supporter is not already a PS3 owner?

Anytime I hear somebody defending Blu-Ray all I hear is them justifying their expensive impulse PS3 purchase.

Not only do I not own a PS3, but I have never even played one before. Not a friends, not a store demo, none of them. I support Blu-Ray

I really couldn't care who wins though. Id rather there be a clear format instead of both.

The war is helping drive prices down though. It would be interesting to see the price over time of HD and BD players compared to dvd players when they first came out.

I have an HDtv but I won't care about the hd players until their is a clear winner with a player under $200 or a dual format player for that price.

Pointless consumer electronics market? Haha, now THAT is funny.

Well, market-segment. Who cares which format wins? Someone is getting the license $ anyway, what does it matter that Toshiba gets it and not Sony?

Talking about a small segment is a lot different then including the entire consumer electronics market.

Competition is good. Lowers prices for the consumer faster than if there was only 1 option. There will be a clear winner in a few years, or sooner if some major studios jump ship from one to the other.

No. Please read my posts again. I made it very clear that I was referring specifically to why people dislike and distrust Sony. You want something specific to movies or video games? How about Sony's idiotic copy protection that made their DVDs unplayable on their own DVD players? How about the C 13:00 error that was common on a half dozen Sony DVD players and caused them to fail after 18-24 months? How about the PSX? Do you like playing your video games upside down? How about the PS2? I've never had to open up any of my other game systems to make adjustments.

Do you share the same love for Microsoft and the 360? They have a shady past. Many consider them ruthless. Their consoles have had various issues. Seems pretty similar to Sony.

I haven't bought a 360 yet, and I won't until I am confident that they have fixed it. I'll buy a PS3 too, unless all of the games I want to buy are cross-platform. It'll be a while before I buy a PS3 though, because I'm not paying more than $300 for one (same with the 360, and the Core system is not an option - the 20 GB PS3 would have been an option before they nixed it). I haven't had the same bad experience with Microsoft stuff that I've had with Sony stuff though. I've never had any Microsoft products break. I've had over $2000 worth of Sony products die prematurely.

I love sony products. That being said, I am also an educated consumer. If you notice my sig, I'll be buying a Xbox and not the PS3. I still support Blue-Ray though.

Having two competing formats is absolutely NOT good for consumers [edit: at this point]. For starters, it's not good to have consumers deciding who "wins" when they don't even understand the differences. You'll have people picking one format just because they like the name better (I'm talking about HD-DVD), even if it's inferior. And when there is a "winner," those on the losing side will have a player that will only play a very limited library of movies that will not continue to expand. Essentially they'll be stuck with another component in their entertainment center that only plays a small subset of their movies. Then there's the fact that each side has limited title availability. Wouldn't you as a consumer rather have access to all of the currently available HD-format movies?

Having two competing formats is beneficial because it can force improvements in both formats to match the competing format. But the time for that to happen has long since passed - the formats are not changing anymore. Competition between player manufacturers will drive prices down, not competition between formats.
