three 3.0 ghz processors. LMAO! Yeah, what did they say for original specs for first xbox? I'd be surprised if it had ONE 3.0 ghz processor.

that is the specs on the next xbox that were released last week or so, and supposedly it will be on demo at e3.

since you seem to know it all, what were the original specs for the xbox 1 and what did it actually end up being?

No doubt. Mark my words if you want, but the new Xbox will have 3 G5-derivative chips in it. The sad thing is that I happen to know from an industry insider friend, that the new PS3 WILL be even more powerful then the Xbox2.

I understand your sceptisism, its warrented, they said the same thing about the "Emotion Engine". The fact is that the EE was and is more powerfull then the Pentium 3 in the current Xbox, its just insanely difficult to program for. To this day, developers haven't figured out half of the coding processes that would bring out the EE. And at 200 Mhz vs the 766 P3 or whatever they threw in the Xbox, its quite a powerful chip indeed.

That being said, the Cell Architecture isn't the same as the EE. It is the same in that its going to be insanely difficult to program for. But not that much MORE difficult then the multi-threaded Xbox2. Both systems have multiple cores or CPU's and will be difficult to program for.

I understand that they say the same thing with every new console, but its never been a fact that new consoles will be more powerful. Which in this case is a fact. The Xbox2 and PS3 will be capable of a lot more then PC's will be at the same time, meaning later this year (oct) for the Xbox2 and the PS3 either late this year or early next. This is a fact. So will consoles take over the PC market? No, but its getting closer and closer so that one day may see this happen. What we do know, is if the developers and programmers can do it right, the games on this gen of consoles will finally look better then their PC counterparts, which is saying something.
Right, because you know EXACTLY how far along PCs will be in a year from now.

True, but with Intel and AMD road maps, you can get a pretty good idea. Anyone who has done the proper research on Cell architechture could figure out that its vastly superior to x86. In every way imaginable, no less. I mean, I'm not going to imply what the OP implies, that it could end PC gaming. Just that it is CAPABLE of superior graphics, and has superior processing power.

This could mean that PC's will go the way of Cell architechture some day too. It all depends on the software front, not the hardware.

I'd much rather throw $450 at a new graphics card and hawk my old pc games than buy into the next generation of console.
Video game consoles have always been a one-way street...
Buy console, it becomes worthless in a very short time. Buy games, they become worthless even faster.
I can get a good return on my pc games when I'm done playing them, and I can get a good buck out of my old graphics card.
Aside from that, My pc games get updated, mods, and new features.
Value-wise, consoles suck.

The line between PC's and Gaming consoles is quickly blurring. Once HD tv's become the norm, whats to stop word processors and web browsers being sold for consoles?

One word: WEBTV.

Do you remember that? Do you remember HOW MUCH THAT FVCKING SUCKED?

Consoles are always limited by their technology, leaving developers making games too advanced for them... which always results in LAG on a console.

PCs are always upgradable and customizable, so they never have a cap.

Uh...I think consoles should stay as far away from PC gaming as possible. The more consoles are "becoming PCs" the more I frear there are going to be 10 year olds somehow getting malicious code on their machine with Zombie XBox Gen 5 consoles attacking PCs out on the internet. Or mabye it's just useles speculation.

HDTV, USB, and online connectivity will leave the PC with no advantages and a host of disadvantages. PC gaming on the technological edge won't survive more than a few more generations of console hardware. Of course, less demanding titles that appeal to mainstream audiences will always be around for the PC.

PC has functionality. let me see you photoshop, surf the web, nef on ATOT 😛, and talk on aim all on the same platform. Sorry, only PC's got that. Not to mention, most PC games have FREE ONLINE GAMING. XBL is monthly fee. someone also mentioned mods, some of which have been the purpose for buying a game (CS for HL1). Mods are essentially free games. And yes, any real gamer knows keyboard/mouse will own a controller any day of the week. My athlon 1700+ will never die! 😛

If you recall, technically the XBOX was "better" than 99% of gaming PC's at the time of it's release, This was a deliberate attempt to lure hardcore gamers away from the PC market. It was met with some sucess too. The theory behind it is that there is a small segment of the population who has to have "the best" at all times, and for several months, the XBOX had the best graphics available. I'm sure the case will be the same with the next generation of xbox. For several months it will have the best graphics specs of any system (PC or otherwise). That will draw in a bunch of people, then ATI or nVidia will bypass the xbox's specs with there newer cards, and PC's will once again regain the performance edge.

Basically the reason that Consoles will never completely kill PC's as gaming platforms, is that PC's are upgradeable, consoles aren't. Imagine if the Original XBOX "killed" PC's as gaming platforms, we all would have had to wait till xbox2 or ps3 came out to play Half Life 2, and we would all have a Geforce 3 level video card...

While consoles may sustain the Game market, PC's drive it. There would be no need to release better engines and more advanced games, if everyone had the same hardware specs, and they stayed the same for 5 years at a time...(life of console)

i dont know what i would do without endless cheat codes, skinning, maps, map editors, mouse, personal keyboard settings, basically free multiplayer, ability to update and patch bugs and glitches..

When consoles start going more toward that area (kind of like the way sexbox is going...underground that is...). I would be more interested in console gaming.

The game Pariah will have a Map Editor for xbox in May. More games are supposed to follow with the same ability. Mouse and keyboard with custom settings is available now with the fragboy adapter. Free multiplayer is available now with XBConnect. Updates and patches have been available for a while now with Xbox Live and xbox magazine disks. I think Skins are going to be available with the next Xbox.

And I go on Xbox Live to avoid people with cheat codes. Nothing worse than trying to play in a multiplayer game when the other person has cheats going on. If you're talking about cheats in single player then they have those on Xbox too.

i was talking in the non-modded sense. xbconnect isnt as fast as xblive (currently... because its mostly p2p). the constant huge drop in xblive community everytime micro$oft forces an update. hehe

i guess i do agree about it maybe leveling out in the future. its not that console gaming is making PC gaming a thing of the past... Its the fact that Console gaming is becoming more like PC gaming and gets more popular the smaller the gap gets.

i think that made sense. call me out on it.

I would much rather sit down @ my pc, turn it on, look at all of the cool $#!T that i put into it, boot up a game, and then change the settings to make them better or worse. Plus PCs have something called a mouse and a keyboard which are WAY better than those stupid console controls. They expect you to jump and spin at the same time without breaking a finger.

My thoughts. 🙂

This is a paradox... seriously the only way a console would win out over a PC would be to have all the functionality of a PC, which then... would make it fit the description of a PC.... because in the end .. you own it (personal) and its computes data (computer)... so its just a propriety PC.

Consoles will lead but the PC will never die out. If game manufacturers started making games only for consoles, the only place in computers they would need high end processors and video cards is in work situations where they do rendering and whatnot. For the home market people wouldn't need more than the cheapest celeron or semperon and just onboard video. Intel, AMD, ATI, and Nvidia would see a huge decrease in demand for their higher end products. It's in their interest to make sure the PC gaming market stays alive.

On the other hand a lot of game makers don't want to put out games for the PC. The player base is smaller, there is a ton of work required to make the games compatible with all the PCs out there, and the games are more easily copied.

Fortunately there are die hard PC gamers like myself who are spending money on games and hardware. We are still enough that many game manufacturers see a profit in eventually porting games to the PC. I shudder to think what would happen if game makers stopped putting games out for the PC.

One reason, no THE reason why PCs own Consoles:

Porn.

yea but u can do pr0n on an imac mini😉.. pc's might never end, but eventually "gaming" pc's might get scarce

Nope. By the time it comes out it will be at least 1 generation behind midrange PC hardware.

Now if if was fully compatible with all the PC games .. AND if you could use a keyboard and mouse, and it didn't use that ugly "cell shading" crap, and if it it ran at a decent resolution with massive texture sizes, then MAYBE it could chip away from the PC gaming market, however, there are plenty of PC gamers out there who won't even consider any console until they allow for PC like controls and PC like graphics as well as good FPS games such as Far Cry or Half Life 2, and quality MMORPG's like World of Warcraft.

Too many nerds that hate consoles as much as they do Apple.

Hey now, I don't hate apple!
Though I can't say that I am fond of any console since the Sega Genesis. (though the Genesis was a fun system back in the day)

hmm... i'm looking up the specs on the xbox CPU, which is supposedly equivalent to 2 3.0 gigahertz powerPC CPU's, each capable of 2 instructions per pass. I believe the p4 willhamette was operating at 4 64 bit instructions per pass on a 533 mhz fsb, while the most recent generation powerPC on the G5 can do 8. In the end, the supposed 'revolutionaryt' xbox CPU doesn't sound that impressive anymore.

I believe EA's sports division alone generates more money in the console market than the entire PC market generates. And you know what's surprising? I was talking to a friend at EA last fall and he said their biggest game is FIFA...

No way. Computers will always be around because:

Consoles can't do these or not very well: play music, download stuffs, FFS games, watch tv, upgrade, mods, photo edit, CAD, Excel/Word/Access/Powerpoint for work/business, taxes, burn DVD, CD, music <legally of course>, IM, and much more.

I do like consoles. I have the original NES in the 80s, two Dreamcasts. They are fun but not multi tasking as well as the PC.

huh? the topic is about the end of "PC Gaming", not the PC itself.

personally, I think it makes sense for gaming to be more focused on dedicated gaming machine instead of general purpose PCs that have to have all sorts of upgrades and require the game programmers to program for all sorts of configurations.
